Re: Johnny Winter
And that "helluva band in rock and roll heaven" just got better!
RIP Johnny.
RIP Johnny.
Re: Johnny Winter
I saw him at the Filmore in ~1988.
Still the most impressive guitar performance I have ever seen. I have never seen any one play like him. I was utterly amazed.

Re: Johnny Winter
I got to see him here in Beaumont a couple of months ago. He looked healthy and walked himself to the stage. The band ran off from him a couple of times but he was digging in with everything he had. His guitar playing was so ahead of it's time but for me it was always his voice. Man the blues just poured out of his throat with such a freedom and release. Nobody else can sing like that.
I've got blisters on my fingers!

Born in Leland Mississippi, raised in Beaumont Texas. Here he is in Leland signing a mural ( last photo at the bottom, scroll down)

Re: Johnny Winter
Very sad.
Great guitar player with his distinctive style.

Re: Johnny Winter
I think everything that is wrong with today's musical landscape would be different if Johnny's performance had made it into the Woodstock movie.
The night before he died I went to bed listening to this podcast from Joe Bonamassa and fell asleep concluding that Johnny was just about my favorite guitarist ever;

Re: Johnny Winter
I saw him on the first night of the the Atlanta Pop Festival in '69. Dressed in all black with about 6 or 8 Fender Twins behind him. He looked like a wild ghost floating across the stage playing the hell out of that guitar.
Re: Johnny Winter
Johnny was a huge influence on me musically. The version of Highway 61 on "Captured Live" is a testament to his power and authority on the instrument and I am truly saddened by his loss.

Re: Johnny Winter
He was a motivator/ inspiration in my life for blues.
Mind you, I didn't get into the blues until much later in life.
But I knew who he was in the early 70's.
I think he will be welcomed into the kingdom of heaven as he had huge impact on musicians throughout the world.
The guy could play!
RIP

Re: Johnny Winter
Sorry, late to post, been working nights and just heard the sad news.
I saw him in the fall of 1982. He was the opening act for April Wine, but I only went to see Johnny (I gave April Wine a chance, but walked out in the middle of their opening song!). Anyways, like most opening acts, Johnny suffered from a poor sound mix, but the sound guys finally got it together, just in time for a smokin' rendition of "Highway 61", with Johnny playing his Firebird, providing probably the greatest slide guitar work I've ever heard live. He was just blazing. That alone was worth the admission price, and I left, feeling lucky that I got to get a brief chance to see and hear one of the greatest guitar players that ever lived.
Rock on, Johnny.
R.I.P.

I was still in H.S. when a freind of mine rang my bell to show me a guitar..it was an Epiphone Wilshire in cherry red. My freind told me" I just wanted to show you this before I get rid of it. I have to go to Manhattan to sell it to Johnny Winter!" Sure enough!
