Ok, great! Thanks! Wasn't going to be an option on the road to find a replacement.martin manning wrote:That would be a fixed in place bright cap, to boost (or rather maintain) treble as the volume is turned down. As I recall it is not uncommon to clip it out.bcmatt wrote:Ok, looking at schematics and mod threads, I have a quick question:
What does the 1n cap across the preamp volume pot input to wiper do? It seems mine is missing, and I assume it was a mood to tame treble and boost gain, but I am not seeing it in the list of mods in that thread here.
Anyways, it looks like it is finally fixed! I kept inserting guitar into the circuit at different points and disconnecting what was before it. Going straight into the preamp volume put from a separate jack worked fine, so I went through the Lo input jack instead... But pulling put the plug set it off... This was with the write coming from the previous gain stage disconnected. So, I yanked the lo input jack and replaced out with a cliff from the speaker jacks. That fixed everything. I guess it e was somehow not making the connection solid enough when unplugged. I tested it with a multimeter after and it still seemed fine... Must have been some oxidation or bad solder connection somehow, that was imperically unmeasurable aside from sputtering. the new one is dead quick and silent.
Haven't seen evidence of the red-plating or weird.voltages since swapping the two EL34s, but I am still disconcerted about that v and will keep me eye out for more of such.phenomenons.
Cheers everybody! Thanks so much and I will check back in with anything else that might come up.
