along with asleep at the wheel (who coincidently does a version of sugar foot rag), jr. brown was the other big one that got me into music that wasn't on all the pop stations. first song i heard of his was "i hung it up" and man, it starts rip-roaring right off the bat. and then he came through our town in the late nineties. i was so excited to go but he was playing at a (now defunct) club that was 21+! i was too young but probably shoulda tried to sneak in or something, because he's one guy who i'd really like to see live.

RD, tell us more!
Dennis Payne is the co-writer of "Highway Patrol" and played on the original 1966 recording by Red Simpson.
He was from Bakersfield and part of the "Bakersfield Sound" in the '60s.
Dennis began showing up for weekly jam sessions at a local hangout after being invited by a bass player pal of mine who would occasionally gig with him.
He would do his version of Highway Patrol when requested.
Sadly the club changed hands and doesn't host jams currently, so it's been over a year since I've seen him.
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply a direct connection to Junior Brown.

I love Jr! What an effortless, tasty player. I saw him about ten years ago at a local venue. About 30 of us showed up. I was able to sit in the perfect spot and his playing was flawless. Two twins with the blockers in front. He kick some serious ass, especially with the guitsteel.
Jr is surely from another planet. He has the same type energy as Tommy Emmanel and Greg Koch. These guys just never stop.
