I'd like to give a nod to my friend, Billy Roberts, too. Wherever you are, Billy, I wish you well.HeeBGB wrote:Some of those kids, albeit very few, will see that THAT song was written by J.Hendrix and go back and look him up. And then hear the real deal and a lot more.
I guess butchering a song, and playing it without any soul is perfectly acceptable to you...just cause you can flub thru something doesn't mean you should play it.nickm57 wrote:thats fine as long as they dont try to play it on their own, especially in front of a paying audience. but they can play machine gun once they finish bootcamp apparently.

My point was Kids have so much choice these days and the generation line on music is far less than it used to be. You had to buy a record to hear Frank Zappa, and there was far less footage of music. You can now just look up John Coltrane playing "My favorite things".
A lot of the current commercial driven(Major Label ) music, has lost touch with it's audience. Kids and Adults in general pick up on the lack of soul, and in turn consume the older product.
JM is just one example of this, he is a product not an artist. By doing bad covers of great music he will remain one. Even though he might have the talent and audience base to do more.
It's about respecting the Art. (Music is an Art you know)

no. just using your quote to reiterate the original spirit of the thread
if your playing it to the best of your ability with sincerity, i dont see how it can be without soul.dr. who wrote:I guess butchering a song, and playing it without any soul is perfectly acceptable to you...just cause you can flub thru something doesn't mean you should play it.nickm57 wrote:thats fine as long as they dont try to play it on their own, especially in front of a paying audience. but they can play machine gun once they finish bootcamp apparently.
I agree with this!nickm57 wrote: My point was Kids have so much choice these days and the generation line on music is far less than it used to be. Absolutely untrue. It is a fact that each successive generation wants their own identity. They DO NOT want to listen to their fathers music! There are exceptions to that BUT they are exceptions not the rule.nickm57 wrote:A lot of the current commercial driven(Major Label ) music, has lost touch with it's audience. Artists have been product since the dawn of the record industry. "Rock-N-Roll" was a way to package the product! Coined by a DJ in Cleveland and adopted by music A&R men the world over.nickm57 wrote:JM is just one example of this, he is a product not an artist. What the OP finally stated was this:wsaraceni wrote:i agree some people just sound horrible playing certain things, but your original thread had nothing to do with his technical abilities and everything to do with the fact that he (Mayer) was never in a war.
NEITHER Hendrix nor Mayer served in a war. For all I know, perhaps Mayer has gone to a gun club and experienced the sound of small arms and rapid fire.dr. who wrote:He (Hendrix) did however use a M16 during training, as well as practice chopper evacuations, and parachute jumps. He was stationed where there were tests done with the missles from the choppers so he did get to hear one of the two types of screamers.

1st. thank you for your service. i know that a good part of the reason i get to sit home and type on forums like this is beacuse a lot of people paid with their lives to give us that opportunity.Zippy wrote:What the OP finally stated was this:wsaraceni wrote:i agree some people just sound horrible playing certain things, but your original thread had nothing to do with his technical abilities and everything to do with the fact that he (Mayer) was never in a war.

Dr. Who didn't serve during the Vietnam era either.
Are you experienced?
Yeah, I'm a vet and (well) over 50. I don't care to listen to Mayer but that has nothing to do with his lack of military service. I just don't like his snooty attitude.
Pretty awful except the 15 or so seconds of meh soloing out of 6+ mins of crap. Lyrics aside I think that he spends more time thinking of how he will do his hair, makeup, and wardrobe than coming up with the music.wsaraceni wrote:also, i like mayer the best when he sounds like himself. for anyone that really dislikes mayer, check out his new song "assassin"
i'd really like to hear your take on that one
