Re: ODS for rock 'n' roll
Call me mad, but the HRM that I got now, through a MESA 2x12 Recto Cab sounds absolutely killer for rock and hard rock...with an EQ in loop it has no problem to produce metal sounds.
Re: ODS for rock 'n' roll
A couple of years ago at the LA Amp Show, Mike Guerrero played a Bluesmaster with the gain dimed. I believe his comment was, "This ain't no blues amp, it's a metal amp."

100w EL 34 HRM I would classify it under late 70's 80's.. really good Marshall/ Hard rock type tones.. they all kind of have somewhat different personalities.. depending on the amp setup.. you can basically cover Later Zep... Some early EVH...Nugent..etc..
they have that rawness about them and like Henry was saying Stiffin up the output section and a hot pair of pickups will get you into Guns & Roses territory... I'll bet you do a 135 w 4 6550/KT88 with the stiff filtering may even get into the Metalica/ More modern Metal Zone... The one thing it doesn't do the Seattle grunge thing... If you want that tone go on e-bay and look for the most abused never been serviced POS Silverface Fender.. LOL!!
Right now I am working on a 2X12 806 thiele hybrid cab.. One half is the 806 and the other is an open back... It's chambered inside so it's a true 806.. The prototype had an EV 12 L loaded thiele and the open back had a WGS lead 80.. We'll start production some time this summer..

Interesting about that 806 cab.
Do keep us informed.

Don't know about the great mind thing..(referring to me!! LOL) Actually the seperate cabs would be a bit cooler with respect to you can face them differently slightly out for more stage splash a bit bigger!! 2nd you can carry them seperate easier on the back.. I know this 2X12 w/ EVL is heavy as a mo fo !! The only advantage I see w/ 2X12 is the energy supplied by the 2 speakers transmitted through the wood shared by the Thiele port and open back will no doubt offer up more thump around 100hz I am guessing.. It would be interesting to spectrum analyze the 2..
The fun part would be experimenting with different speakers.. I have a Weber Blue dog I want to try w/EV.. This way you can get the punch of the EV and smooth open mid range zing out of the Alnico...Could be great or totally SUCK!!

Though not tuned boogie made a nice open/closed 2x12. The top slanted.
only drawback it was heavy.

Re: ODS for rock 'n' roll
My favorite remains a 1x12 cab for its direct and focused sound, which is what I need for soloing.
2x12 IMO are much more diffuse, which is great for rythm playing.
If I wnat more power I mike the cabinet. I don't understand why you guys even consider dragging multispeaker cabinets, unless you're part of a big act with roadies doing the hard work.
I've seen Carlos Santana, prior to his 'Smooth' album comback, with just one 1x12 boogie cabinet, with an Altec speaker w. alu cone. He had a great sound.
If you use a weber beem blocker or just leave a X in the baffle in fornt of the speaker, a 1x12 cab won't hurt your ears.

The beam blocker may not work like you think, I did a customer build using one and thought it put the annoying beam sound everywhere in the room, then I read:bluesfendermanblues wrote: If you use a weber beem blocker or just leave a X in the baffle in fornt of the speaker, a 1x12 cab won't hurt your ears.

A Doughnut might be a better choice.

Its a matter of manipulatin the high frequencies from the speaker cone.
Wheather you use diffusion
- donougt,
- beam blocker or
- an AC30 baffle
OR absorbtion
- foam the high frequencies, which are very directionally.
We know these terms from studio acoustics. So why not use the techniques in our speakers cabinets. We (guitar players) tend to be too traditional in our approach to these.
Re: ODS for rock 'n' roll
I've found the beam blocker doesn't work as well with the 12's like Henry was saying.. I think it works much better on a 15...If you cut a cross in the wood on the Baffle it works a little Better than the Weber beam blocker...

Re: ODS for rock 'n' roll
Are Dumbles a good amp for rock? Here's something from one of my teachers at GIT, Barrett Tagliarino. On "Wrecked On the[/color] Siren's Rocks" that whole intro is a Dumble #129, which is very much like the #124 schematic but has a 100K Drive pot and two 600uF photoflash electrolytics in totem for 300uF believe it or not. It's a great tone and I don't think anyone could argue it isn't a good rock tone.

He uses the Dumble a lot on that album but also a pre-CBS Super Reverb and an old AC30.
