ODS for rock 'n' roll

Post by benoit »

I just want to state here for posterity, in case anyone still thinks the ODS only does jazz/blues/fusion, that a 100W 6L6 HRM will get eff'in RUDE.

With the preamp and OD gain dimed and PAB on I get wicked wicked metals.

With preamp and OD gain around noon I get dirt with surprising clarity. I like weird open chords and extended chords and such, so I love being able to whip out a fully diminished chord using plenty of gain and have it come out still sounding like a diminished chord and not mud city.

I don't think I need to say anything about the cleans other than that they rule. When I actually want to play a jazz standard I like PAB off, deep switch on. If I played a lot of jazz I might actually like the deep switch on a footswitch because it's a little much when chording down low but really helps the first and string sound fuller when I solo.

But back to the rock... figure in an effects loop that's great even without a dumblator or other buffer and you've got yourself a seriously versatile amp.

I thought I really wanted something non-master volume with mid to high gain but I really am pretty happy with the ODS, even through the peavey road king combo (open back 2x12 with peavey speakers) I'm using right now.

Ben,

For your amp the first thing I noticed was I didn't have any cabinets that could take the punishment your amp puts out. So I would think a large closed cab is going to be needed for sure.

I have no knowledge about Dumbles but your amp was very good whether it was clean or pushed. I think definitely JBLs or other very high wattage speakers.

Hmm... I have mixed feelings. I'm not that old but I'm definitely old enough (and broke enough) that it won't be a 4x12. Probably a 2x12 with the oval port. I like the idea of two Scumback M75s with the large dustcap. Thought also about doing a beefy mesa style closed back two twelve with regular M75s. That one would go great with a wreck as well when the time comes, or a plexi, depending on what I build next. More realistic (budget) right now would be a TL806 with a WGS lead 80 clone, but for now I'll use my bass player's 2x12, as that is the best kind of cheap: free.

I like the WGS lead 80's a little better than the Celestions.. A bit tighter on the bottom and a hint smoother... Looks like they use Eminence Frames..Good speaker for the money....

Ditto on the WGS compared to the Celestions. I did have my first failure with one but it was bizarre, the relatively unused speaker had a strange dissonance at a few select frequencies which sounded like the amp had ghosting issues. Must have been a loose winding in the voice coil. I threw it in the trash so it wouldn't haunt me later.

Back to the point of the thread - ODS amps are good rock amps especially if they have a choke and twice the filtering on the first node to stiffen them up a little.

Ben,

Let me know if you want to build some cabs, I have a heated 3 stall garage with all the tools and was thinking about building a TL806 too. Your welcome to come over and do some building. I have to clean the shop first.

That'd be a blast. I don't want for tools or space as my father in law owns a cabinet shop and lets me use his stuff whenever I need to (lots of great beefy tools that run on 3 cycle) but the company's enough to sell me on the garage :D

Are you referring to Celestions made in china, or are you including the British made stuff in that statement? I've only ever heard the chinese ones and have been underwhelmed, other than a ZBest cab with a G12H-30 and a Vintage 30 that sounded decent.

I'm more than happy to let this turn into a speaker thread.

Why heck Ben lets use your father in laws shop :)

My equipment is low budget but gets the job done. Actually if we could cut down the plywood with a good contractor saw I have the rest. I sold my large table saw in 2003 and did not replace it with a very good one.

No problems using my garage, anytime you want. I am always home or running to the Menards.

Also I have an old Peavy speaker manual for building many different floor monitors and PA enclosures if you want to build some of that stuff as well.

Yeah, actually the thing to do would be to take a sheet or two out there. He's got a big CNC router that'll do 4x8s, so I just have to draw up the pieces in his software. In fact he'll usually order me wood at cost. I just have no money right now for wood, much less tolex, grill cloth, handles, feet, piping, etc. I need a proper headcab for the ODS and a speaker cab to go with it. It may be a while though.

Actually the only ones I've compared were the British ones. I guess I should try a Chinese too to be fair.

2 x 12 does it in spades for me. I have much trouble going back to just one cone now. An EV in a TL is the only thing, for me, that gets even close to the pleasure of a 2x12. I imagine I should splurge and try a Port City wide 12 cab or Hermida or something. Yes, I dig those WGS CL80s, too! Like the OD tone especially, cleans leave me a bit flat.

Regarding original post - THESE AMPS CAN RAWK! Enough for this geezer........

Do you have two CL80s, or maybe a CL80 and something else to balance things out a little.. I do want good clean tone.

My fave cab is an oval back 2 x 12 Avatar. 1 WGS CL80 - the $20 ones from their promo - and an Emi Delta Pro 12A. Damn that cab sounds good. Nice tight bass in the cleans and killer OD. I had the EV in there but, put it back in a TL for going smaller.
