Re: Circuit Board

blackjack wrote:Nice photos. I'm new. It sounds like you're saying this is an actual build by H. Dumble? So, is that circuit board a piece of masonite panelling, because it looks like it. And are the holes in it just holes or are there eyelets or turrets used somewhere? If it's just panelling I really have to hand it to the builder because that's handy and functional.
Welcome blackjack! 10~4, it's a real Dumble amp. Yes that's Formica or it's equivalent with eyelets at every component junction. Prenty OK di-electric that
Formica. I used to get the sample pieces and build FX circuits on 'em for stomp boxes.

Ever since those jokers at K & M saw a Dumble they've been using it too. If I paid
$6K+ for an amp and saw that Boy Scout project lookin' stuff in it I'd $hit a Kosher
dill pickle and then spend every spare moment slagging them on any site that cared. Well, probably not that much but I'd be incensed

So this BEGS!! the question..Does Formica actually change the tone for the better!! I understand HAD use of it..He more than likely picked it up at the edge of a curb on trash day somewhere to try and save money...Looking at it here from the sidelines you would use it in your production builds because A..It really does effect tone!! Or B...Because Dumble used it ..or C...You want to save 5 bucks an amp...As far as how it looks no opinion

When I first saw the board material, I thought it looked like crap.

Why K&M chose to copy this aspect of a Dumble is questionable, but who knows, maybe there is someone out there that thinks cheesy wood formica panels will give them the edge!

Hey Mark

Kind of funny.. My father in law is an old Tube jockey from the 60's... Radios TV's ....He went on to work at Hughes Comm..doing all sorts of cool circuit designs for satellites etc...Anyway I showed him a picture of the inside of a Dumble all gooped up w/Formica board..He said I hope that's not one of your amps... I said no dad it's a Dumble amp they go for about 40k..You should of seen the look on his face  I think it's case and point where everyone gets so immersed in the Dumbleore they ignore the obvious...

Yeah, it is kind of funny, besides gooping all the components, what did he disagree with on the Dumble build. (I might learn something?)

We do take a lot of stuff as Gospel, when maybe we should think a bit outside the square.

Main filters definitely comes to mind here.

I really think some of you are whiners, :)
personally I think its super cool with wooden look formica in the Dumbles !!

exellent and easy to work with and gets a classier look inside imo
but keep in mind there are many variants on this type of material and some is better than the other for electrical use,
so you cant just take any of it because there are some different variants actually,

fiberglass boards maybe better for electrical use but on the other hand looks like a skulled and shaved pig, imo
and is also not the least a health risk to work with since the fiber dust when drilling and cutting
is not good for your body at all !

And for those not "with" the "natural look", there's always the black formica boards from SN#33-40's!

Beware of it's darker tone, though! Hehe... (oh wait, that's a joke for the EJ forum! Nevermind!)

Take care,
Hale

LOL Tubetwang!

When I build a circuit board. I want it to look like a circuit board, not a cheap counter top!

Hmmm...I'm sensing a market opportunity for a formica manufacturer to produce finishes in Brazilian Rosewood, Quilted Maple, Curly Koa...

Here we go, the next big thing, formica 'retro' kits with 'the tone' . Has anyone tried the granite countertop boards yet, - hard to drill, but not impossible, with a tone that'll last into the next century.

It's interesting when you get a total outsiders perspective on things...
My wife got me a Nat#%^is chassis for Christmas and was going through some pics of some of the older Dumbles.. I thought it might be cool to do one in the suede...Since she has a pretty good eye.. I showed her a picture of a blue one...First came the weird face then came the your kidding right...
After I got to thinking about it she may of had a point...Funny how that works
Anyone here have an opinion on the suede covering...

On the formica.
Everyone seems hung up on the dielectric properties....
Coupling caps are microphonic. You can tap them in a live amp and hear it.
Caps used to be called condensers, like condenser mics.... ;O)
Soo... goop and softer mica boards may really be all about lessening the vibrations to these little mics laing across the board, making them less prone to micro phonics.

I have had an amp out of the cab sitting on top of a speaker cab. One might be very surprised to look into an amp sitting atop a speaker cab at high volume. The amount of energy is astonishing. I can see why one might gravitate towards softer boards and goop...

As for suede.....Interesting my wife seems to carry the exact notion. All I can say is get real suede.... so far all the "ultra" suede and alternatives have not cut the mustard.. You can get it mounted without bleed through but it simply does not really pull it of imo..... YMMV...
