I understand need for Dynaco spec OTs with the Rocket because that is what KF used on occasion. This being said, the Vox AC30 is 3900 ohms on the primary, and, the Vox OT is SMALLER iron overall. I had a Sunn/Dynaco OT like the one being discussed and it was way big iron. I couldn't get that thing to break up on a dare, and yes, I skipped the taps.
So, I guess that leaves me with few questions. Is part of the charm of a Rocket running the D-470 OT the fact that it takes a bit more gain before breakup? Does anybody want a Rocket that breaks up a little sooner?
I built an AC30TB using the stock iron that is available from the typical suppliers. And I actually think it is built by Heyboar but not positive. It is plenty loud for any occassion and breaks up beautifully. I do wish it had a 4 ohm tap along with the stock 8 and 16, FWIW, but its really not a problem.
The Expresses that I built run the typical OT on one and also I made a couple with the smaller Hammond 25 watt OT running J/J 6V6s. I definitely prefer the smaller OT amp version when all is said and done. The stock version sounds great but its so loud I can never really use it in the way it was meant to be used. Sorry, Ken!!
Anyway, that D-470 is rated at 50+watts, I already think its too much for any gig I will play - (unless someone can tell me is breaks up at a reasonable level?).
So, skip to the chase, is anybody considering asking Heyboar for a 30 watt Vox clone standup OT? That would be something I would want for the Rocket I am soon to start. ????
Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?
I am using the Dynaclone Z-565-8 OT and a Heyboer 230-0-230 PT in my latest build which is a solid-state rectified half-power (2 - Tube) Rocket, and it sounds fantastic ! I thought the two-tube / solid state would be a compromise over the 4-tube / tube rectifier version, but it certainly is not. I don't know if it is the lower voltages of the PT, or the Dynaclone output transformer, because the rest of the ciruit is pretty much the same, but I am giving the trannies credit for now ! Like others here, I just wanted the Rocket in a smaller package. I am very pleased ! It certainly seems as loud as the 4-tube Rocket, and it also seems livelier, more jangly and bright, but not in a harsh way at all, and with all the cool overdrive really kicking in about 2/3 of the way up on the volume control.
