Dear Chimeboss

Thanks for the tip. I'm not overly impressed with the web-site, but then again it isn't there to impress me.

I found the comment about caps interesting.

He has chosen each component by listening to it. Ken listens to the tonal differences between two brands of the same value capacitor.

In the Trainwreck amp he built himself he used the Mallory PVC caps exclusively, the Komet amp almost always used Mallory 150's exclusively.

I can think of other amps that have used a combination of cap types to get the sound that they wanted. I think in time people on this page will experiment with different types of caps in an effort to get a little more from the various amp circuits.

Perhaps this a job for some of us in future to build the amp and record it with different brands of capacitors. I have tried using 715's and the cheap brown mylar caps from Jaycar electronics, and both amps sounded pretty good.
Yours Sincerely

Mark what did you think of the 715's compared to 150's?

Good question Icetech. I did put 715's into a friends 50 watt bass amp, and I think it had better clarity. Mind you a guitar amp is another matter.

I had been meaning to try an experiment like this with my little Champ amp (only two signal caps which is a bonus.)

I was wondering which cap sounded closest to an old Astron. The caps I have on hand are an old yellow Astron, 715, 418, Mallory 150, and a cheapo mylar cap. (I'm waiting for someone to tell me the blue Astrons sound better  )

I will have to get back to you on this one. Past experiments have told me (from memory) that in some positions the differences in tone are quite apparent and it other positions it much as muchness.
Yours Sincerely
