If weight saving is a requirement, check out the Eminence Tonkerlites.
Neo magnets that weigh 4 ounces!
I put a pair in my Lopo open back 2x12.
I had Celestian clones (Warehouse) speakers before and I liked those a lot. But I felt they were a bit bright for my D'Lite 44 amp. (6L6GC tubes)
These were the Lead Classic and V30 clones with 50 ounce ceramic magnets on each.
The jury is still out on the Tonkers but I am adjusting to them and I think they will stay.
My back really likes the change.
101 db sensitivity
125 W
4 oz magnet weight.
The clones weighed 10 lbs X 2 = 20 lbs for the two spkrs.
The Tonkerlites weigh 4.1 lbs X 2 = 8.2 lbs
11.8 lbs difference in total weight = healthier back

Scott,
I assume you are talking about the EVM-12L Cassic and not the EVM-12L Black label?

Is there a difference? Besides Zakk Wilde his name?BobW wrote:Scott,

Re: Best 12" speaker for ODS and Open or Closed-Back Cab
yes there is supposed to be a difference. the zakk speaker is 300w as opposed to 200w, and it is more tuned for distorted metal sounds. I've heard complaints to the effect that it does not have the nice clean sound you'd find in the ordinary EV

Hey Tom, what's up with lightweight speakers in a Lopo cabinet? Those cabs are by no means lightweight.Structo wrote:If weight saving is a requirement, check out the Eminence Tonkerlites.

What's it weigh?
I build the lightest cabinets possible. That buys you some wiggle room in your speaker choices. Take the weight out of the cabinet, add some Celestions w/ big magnets, rock out! If you use your neos in one of mine you'll toss the cabinet over your head. That's what happens when you lift something that's much lighter than you expected.

Do you have any links to your cab builds?muchxs wrote:Hey Tom, what's up with lightweight speakers in a Lopo cabinet? Those cabs are by no means lightweight.Structo wrote:If weight saving is a requirement, check out the Eminence Tonkerlites.

I am especially interested in a 1x12 combo version for an ODS.

I don't have any idea what the cab weighs.muchxs wrote:Hey Tom, what's up with lightweight speakers in a Lopo cabinet? Those cabs are by no means lightweight.Structo wrote:If weight saving is a requirement, check out the Eminence Tonkerlites.

I don't even have a bathroom scale at home, the wife forbids it.
I just calculated the difference in weight due to the speakers.

I'm fairly certain I can beat a Lopo 2x12 by at least ten pounds. I'm not going to buy one to find out.
Re: Best 12" speaker for ODS and Open or Closed-Back Cab
Yeah I bought it because I had just finished my D'Lite 44 kit and I didn't have a cab for it. Well I have a Marshall AVT 4x12 but I wanted a 2x12.
I wanted something that was constructed well but I couldn't afford a Avatar or similar cab.
One of the unique things about the Lopo cab is that it is front loading.
Even though some have told me that a rear loading cab sounds better, (I don't know that for a fact) I found it was easy to mount the speakers and feel you have less a chance of putting a bolt through the cone with the front load since you feed the screws in from the front.
Of course there is always the dreaded screw driver slip into the cone but I haven't done that.
It is a pretty heavy cab though, I believe they use the 13 ply birch on them.
I got the tweed covering on it and they did a pretty good job on that.
Your cabs look nice as well.
I would think you would do well here for supplying the forums builders with cabs that are more utilitarian vs the hardwood cabs like the wreck guys like.

I just built a Dumble 1 x 12" combo. It was like, "Where have you been all my life?" It's not covered yet so no pics.
I tap tune work in progress to judge cabinet response. My nephew was setting off firecrackers outside my workshop. He ran out of firecrackers and came inside. I slapped the cabinet and he jumped. I know I have a good one there.
I'm finally hearing, "Wow! Your cabinets are really nice!" instead of "Can you build it cheaper than Mojo?"
