Sure looks like a legit basket weave cab to me at least from the back.

My 68 Slant baffleboard bracing looks like yours.martins3325 wrote: Got it..Thanks! Looks like I got mine right now..the pic below is mine. I have a couple questions for you..not to hijack the thread..but the wiring question is pretty much put to bed anyway.
1) I know you are much more a Marshall cab expert than I am..Is there anything that would make you think my cab is not a late 60s cab?
[IMG:647:550]http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d137/ ... P_2588.jpg[/img]
2) I have a really nice clean Tweed GA-08 Discoverer --and nice new to me '96 Gibson Yamano R8.. a nice pair!-- ..I know your a big Gibby fan from seeing your posts on TGP --and you like the non T, GA9 in particular --. I like this GA8 amp alot..

The triangular supports at the bottom of the baffleboard are 68-early 69 construction features.
[img:800:600]http://www.southbayampworks.com/68slantr/DSCN6700.jpg[/img]
Since yours doesn't have it, probably a mid to late 69 model.
Here's what my late 69 Slant looked like inside, pretty much like yours.

As far as Tradarama is concerned, he's solid, no funny business with him at all. We've bought and sold from each other 4-5 times, never a problem.
As far as old Gibson amps, I'm actually a GA-8 fan like you, NOT a GA-9, 14 or 18 lover.
I typically move the baffle board forward so that a 12" Celestion G12H30 will fit in there and clear the power tubes by 1/4". I also change the OT to a Hammond 125 ESE, add a 4/8/16 ohm switch with two jacks, and if needed, upgrade the power tranny to a Fender Deluxe model for a bit more power and clean headroom. If I want less volume and more sag I leave the 5Y3 rectifier tube in there, but usually swap it out for a GZ34.
The JJ 6V6's work well with the amp, and since there's only one preamp tube, I'll either go with NOS, or a Sovtek LPS (after tossing out a few to find a good one without a bunch of noise) 12AX7.

Re: Wiring 4 Scumbacks in 4/12 Cab
Thanks for the input. Interesting..the cab I posted a picture of first was supposedly a 66-67 which looks pretty much identical to mine..and mine has the the strip along the bottom of the cab..which is "notched" for the bottom of the speakers slide into. --I noticed your 69 doesnt have that. The only difference I can see between that one and mine is the side the center post is notched on. I didnt mean to imply Tradarama had any intent to pass off a bogus cab..in fact he was the one who said he got emails from a bidder saying it wasnt the real deal..but with no support as to why..probably guy just trying to get him to sell it for dirt cheap. Im 99.9% that it is the real deal..and at $500 for the empty cab..which is about what Mojo gets for a new one..I think I did pretty good on it.
And sorry I mis-spoke..I have a Tweed GA-6 Lancer..not a GA-8 Discoverer..Id like to try a discoverer though and see how they compare. Looks like Gibson did several 1-12 Tweed amps in the 12-15W range. My Lancer has more gain than any of the Tweed Deluxes Ive had, a little different tone signature..hard to describe but id say it has a flatter response across the full tone range, where the 5e3 seemed maybe a bit more open but Mid enhanced. Id like to find myself a nice Discoverer though!

$500 for that cab? I'd have been all over that!
I'd love to get an old wood Marshall cab!

Yeah..thats what I figured..you can see more photos..front, handles ect ect on the ended auction page..definitely retolexed..but still think it was a more than solid buy!Lonely Raven wrote:$500 for that cab? I'd have been all over that!

Ultimately I think him stating that someone questioned its authenticity kept the price down..works for me. Plus Im 99.9% its the real deal.

Re: Wiring 4 Scumbacks in 4/12 Cab
I need another slant cab like I need a hole in the head, but I would have gladly handed Tradarama $500 for that cab. The handles alone go for around $300 or so. Serial # tag looks to be real, the cab has been rewired with better wire (larger 16 gauge like what I usually use). Speaker bolts are right, looks like someone joined the tolex in the center on the bottom of the cab (whoops!) instead of the piping channel, but other than that I think you got off pretty cheap for that era cab.
If I were to totally restore one of these, it would sell for more than that. So have a great time with it!

Re: Wiring 4 Scumbacks in 4/12 Cab
Thanks for the input..yeah I have no regrets whatsoever..just was looking for expert input on if anything didnt look right that I didnt know about..I think its a case closed real deal. Maybe someday would like to get it retolexed right..but hate shipping something that big..maybe if I find someone in Northern VA who is real good at it. On top of the center seam blunder looks like they tolexed right over the castor inserts. Maybe if I can find a real good matching piece I'll just redo the bottom as the rest looks pretty good.
I re-did the wiring myself ..last night based off your drawing..thanks. One of these days I'll replace the bottom 2 speakers with more scumbacks..just dont want to pilfer the two I have in my Mini Marshall Slant 2x12 Swanson..I had him custom make to my specs..because that cab sounds so good!
Not sure if you saw my post above..about mis-stating which Gibby amp I had..how would you compare the GA-6 Lancer to the GA-8 Discoverer? Big difference between the two?

You're welcome.
The GA-6 Lancer I bought 8 years ago had the Jensen PM Alnico (not sure if it was the P12R/Q, or whatever now), and was a 56 model. It sounded like a Fender Deluxe to me, which isn't enough gain to suit my needs, as I hate OD pedals if I can avoid them. I put in new tubes, but couldn't bring myself to start changing filter caps, etc. so I just sold it. Then I got a GA-8, had it all replaced, except the power tranny and pilot light, and that amp killed. I hooked it up to two G12M Greenbacks with 6402 cones, played for 10 minutes and 8 hours later the cops showed up and took me to jail (long story).martins3325 wrote:Not sure if you saw my post above..about mis-stating which Gibby amp I had..how would you compare the GA-6 Lancer to the GA-8 Discoverer? So I'm only a fan of the GA-8 amps. I've extended their capabilities by adding a TMB tone stack, plus a dual position tone stack bypass on a 1 meg push pull pot with different caps for single and dual coil guitars. I'm currently working on putting in a custom Mercury 30 watt tranny with dual EL 34's in single ended mode, TMB stack and the tone stack bypass mod.
I'm sure that amp will kill small animals at 20 foot distances when I'm done.

Great thread. An acquaintance of mine has a slant that he bought from Eric Johnson after a tour. It has pre-rolas also. Three 25 watters and one 20 watter. He mic's the 20 cause that's what EJ told him to do.
Here's the back:

Tough to say what year that cab is. Could be anywhere from late 67 to early 70. Have to see the insides to be more specific.

Re: Wiring 4 Scumbacks in 4/12 Cab
Seems like exact dating Marshall cab is more art than science..without he original cones anyway...and not a ton of "cab gutshots" out there on the web of various years cabs..his look like Cane grill versus Salt and Pepper...is that a clue on dating? I found a guy had a vintage Tall Hendrix cab..original but empty ..wanted $1500 though..might still be a solid price given how rare those are..if I had the correct speakers...if I recall though was pretty bare inside..if memory serves me --which is admittedly spotty-- it didnt have a center post in it.

Re: Wiring 4 Scumbacks in 4/12 Cab
Dating a Marshall cab is easy with original speakers. However that's rare to find anymore. I've had cabs that had original speakers in them from 68 - 1979, so I've been able to document the changes.
Here's a 68 slant I have (no, it's NOT for sale) that I recovered the tolex on, but has original cloth.

By 1971 they'd gone to the 9" white Marshall logo, but with a gold corner logo. This is an ultra rare Bass cab from 71. New cloth on this one. Note the sound post design, no corner triangles for support on the bottom of the baffle board, either, plus it's the MDF/particle board back panel, too.

Re: Wiring 4 Scumbacks in 4/12 Cab
Thats great stuff Jim! Thanks! Interesting thing, wonder if you noticed..your '68 the center post 2x4 is notched on the Left side of the 2x4, whereas the '70 is notched on the Right side like mine...could just be a matter of who was assembling that day. A couple other things ive noticed from all the gut shots ive seen is: Some have triangles in the corners like your '68, some have a bottom strip, some have a notched bottom strip for the very bottom of the speaker basket, and some have nothing in the bottom like your 70! I saw a guys gut shot of an original '68 that had the notched bottom strip like mine and the pic I posted earlier in this thread. At this point im not sure if there is a code to crack on those items..could be willy nilly type thing at the factory.
