Part Sources?

Post by v00d00blues79 »

I'm in the process of sourcing parts for an A1a build and i'm curious where you guys have gotten some of your parts at. Most specifically:

18.2K resistors
Transformers
160uF/100V Capacitors

Thanks,

Andy

www.mouser has the resistors and capacitors.

http://www.toneslut.com/transformers/ has the transformers.

Thanks!

I'll have to look closer at mouser. Didn't notice the caps and resistors there before.

Thanks,

Andy,
Here is a possible part# (Mouser) for the 160uf caps.
661-PH330
I used these in my build and they worked fine. I don't think most people on this forum are too thrilled about using these but they are cheap and are not very large.

Eric

PS: They are rated at 330 VDC

What would then be the preferred brand for this cap? I"m not too worried about the price of the components as it will take me a while to get the parts together anyway, but i'm trying to go for the best sounding amp i can make.

You could always try Mallory -- a preferred brand in the real thing. Mouser has one:
539-TCG161T350N2L

damned expensive, though.

Power supply caps

Post by oggidog »

Mouser either does not have Mallory caps for all the values needed in the power supply or they must be back ordered. What are peoples' opinions on Illinois or Sprague caps? Any effect on the tone, etc. Thanks.

Personally, I don't trust Illinois. They tend not to be overrated like some others and I've seen a couple of tests on various parameters (including ESR, ripple, noise, etc...) and they don't perform as well or last as long as Sprague Atoms.

I've used Atoms pretty religiously for a while now. They test as well as anything not significantly more expensive, and have a good reputation. They retain a nice, low ESR over time, and they tend to be overrated for what they are. Makes me feel more comfortable that they'll last a long time and not fail catastrophically.

I haven't done blind taste tests to see if amps sound better with them in the supply, or anything like that, so take this suggestion with a grain of salt.

Jeffkt-- OK, I'll admit it, I'm feelin' sort of lazy right now, you don't perhaps have the part #'s for the power supply Mallory caps? I'd give my first born for a complete BOM about now.

Oh, did I mention that everyone here Rocks! All my dumbass questions have been curtiously answered.

Thanks guys.
