We used to "ebonize" red oak for some furniture pieces.  You put rusty nails in a container of vinegar and let it work for a couple of weeks.  Then you wipe it on the oak as many times as you want it dark.  The tannin in the oak reacts with the ferrous oxide/acid mix and turns the oak black.

Remember "Furniture on the Mend?" Then "Furniture to Go." Then some bogus non-furniture program. Those 2 guys used to do lot's of interesting finishes like that. Anigre. It's all veneer (even the inside) on 3/4" (well 18mm really) baltic birch plywood. Which is why all the corners are sharp. I had a lot of this veneer, so why notPaul86 wrote:Hey kec,
