What are the recommended transformer specs for a Rocket

Post by RJ Guitars »

Hello All,

I've been scrubbing through some old posts and looking for info on a ROCKET build. Sounds like TubeDogSmith really put something sweet together and a few others did as well...

Can anyone tell me what power transformer voltages and currents I need and also what OPT specs are recommended for a ROCKET build?

In addition to the specs, is there any consensus on a specific type-vendor-model etc.?

I'd be greatly appreciative...

280-0-280 Volt PT is ideal for a Rocket...

Post by RJ Guitars »

Hey tough crowd here - So I did some more archive scrubbing and found a bit on my own... https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=4780

Based upon a quote from rhinson taken from the above mentioned post -
rhinson wrote:btw an ac30 style amp has a 280-0-280 hv sec. rh
rhinson wrote: the schematics i know about under the "schematics and layouts" thread in the files section (for the rocket and liverpool) don't list the hv sec ac voltage ratings. these were drawn by mark abbott who has seen and taken actual dc voltages in trainwreck amps and listed these on the schematics---if you have that you don't need the hvsec directly--you can figure it based on the b+ at idle. most any of the "gurus" here will tell you what i've stated---ken ran el84's in the rockets around the 300 -310v on the plates and the pool at about 10-20v higher due to ss rect instead of a 5ar4. moose's 260-0-260 hv sec taps will put you right where you want to be in building these----his power tranny or the pacific (two rock ruby) power tranny (250-0-250 hv sec) are what the builder "gurus" here use when building clones for customers. i posted spec sheets/part numbers for the pacific trannies about 2 yrs ago. rh
So is it reasonable to say that a 275-0-275 or a 280-0-280 volt power tranny is ideal for a Rocket?

...now I don't suppose someone has the power supply board layout? I've got a few pictures and found a few posts including Mark Abbots work... some other good stuff but not what appears to be a standard for the power supply board. Did I miss it?

As near as I can tell it's different than the Liverpool or Express... one noticeable physical characteristic is the corner appears to be cut out to clear the rectifier tube. I assume there are some other differences that maybe you can help me discover.

Thanks,

rj

RJ, the Rocket is an AC-30 TB single channel clone. 260V PT, Dynaco a-470 clone OT. Use a GZ34 and a choke and your there.

My advice is to not fool around with the voltage. Heyboer will wind you a custom PT for about the same price as an OTC transformer. I recently had them make me a 335-0-335 300ma with two 6.3V windings for $99.

Get a 260-0-260 just like Allyn says.

You guys come with a lot of authority based on your history here at amp garage... so first thanks for the input and it weighs in as heavy weight input in my plans.

Do we think that KF used a 260-0-260 or a 280-0-280? As near as I can tell he always used high amperage stuff so the 300mA is a given either way.

Since it's not especially hard to get a custom wound PT made to a given spec, I'd like to try what Ken used. 280-0-280 makes sense with the GZ-34, bringing things back to a similar DC as the LIVERPOOL voltages.... 260-0-260 with a rectifier tube seems like the voltages might be a bit low when we finally get to the DC... but that's just a inclination on my part, no history associated with that guess.

On the other hand, I'm not really hoping to lead a parade of rebellious inexperience... if 260-0-260 is the right answer for a ROCKET, I'm easily swayed.... Does anybody have some real voltages on a KF ROCKET?

Ah but here is a thought - dual taps 260-0-260 and 280-0-280...
