Tele clip

Hi, all,

Here's a clip of my Tele through my D'Lite based amp. I've made a lot of changes, though, but I'm liking what I hear. I'm no Scott Lerner, though...just a little noodling while juggling the stupid Zoom recorder on my knees and flipping switches and knobs.

The PC I used to do all my recording with lost the main HD awhile ago, and I'm trying to decide whether to open up the pandora's box of getting a new PC, all upgraded software and plugins, or just replace this hard drive. So the recording setup for this is a Zoom H4 with an old Beyer M260. Speaker is a G12-65, and the amp volume is pretty low, actually.

Okay, not much feedback on this thread. Do I need a better-recorded clip? No need to complement me on my chop (singular), which I know ain't up to snuff with the rest of y'all.

I'd tried to keep things "standard" so people could compare. Unfortunately, I don't have an SM-57, just an old Unidyne III which isn't the same capsule. The Beyer is actually better for some guitar cabs than an SM-57, but it is admittedly darker sounding.

I also kept the tone control all the way up, again so that people could make comparisons more easily. The start of the clip has the clean channel on, so you can hear what it sound like without the overdrive.

There are a number of things that get changed during the clip, and I'd tried to announce them, but my voice is pretty quiet because of where the mic is. Changes during the clip included:
- Clean to OD
- OD to PAB on
- OD with the "Hair" control rolled back but no other changes
- Change from bridge pickup to neck

I actually made some other changes to the amp after this clip was recorded, because I thought the OD was still a bit too bright. I had taken the "grill cloth" off for recording, and it turns out that affected the tone a lot more than I would have thought. The grill on this old cabinet is wicker covered with Radio Shack grill cloth, so it rolls of the treble more than it ought.

Thanks to Bob for responding...anyone else care to chime in? Or do I have to go find a Baker instead of a Tele for this to be a valid test?

Hard for me to tell the tone here at work on these junky speakers, but they were pretty good. I think the hair control removed something essential along with some edge.

I just noticed this thread.
It's hard to get an idea of the tone because you aren't playing enough at a stretch to hear it.
Maybe try just knocking off a song or some chords with the OD on, we pretty much know how these things sound on clean.
One of the tests I like to hear is doing a double stop 4th interval which can show the character of the OD.
Was the amp very loud?
What pickups are in your tele?

I have a home made tele that has Tone Riders in it which are a less expensive pickup but darned if the thing still sounds like a twangy tele on my D'Lite.
The strats on the other hand, are wired in the Lone Start config with a Dimarzio Tone Zone humbucker in the bridges and noiseless singles in the middle and necks.
Try as I might, I can never tolerate a single coil in the bridge on a strat.
Always sounds plinky and ice picky there to my ears.....

I still have some more adjustments to make to mine but it's getting there.
I need to pick up a SM57 to record some clips.

I agree. I noticed that as I started to get things dialed in where I wanted them, the overtones of a perfect fourth to a perfect fifth sank in really nicely.

Was the amp very loud?

No, the amp wasn't very loud at all. Master was about 10:00, IIRC. The pickups are Bill Lawrence, and this amp is nothing if not revealing about what changes in pickup height can do for tone.

I have a Strat with Kinman pickups in it, and I think the bridge actually sounds decent. I have heard Strats where that was not the case, though.

One thing that I think I'd really benefit from would be a get-together of Oregon-Southern Washington folks with some similar amps to compare tones and notes. That way we can use the same guitar, same cabinet, and listen without the recording gear and MP3 codec in the way. If anyone is interested, please let me know and I'll start trying to put something together.

I really like the tone in the middle of the clip.
The low notes have body and the response is alive enough to still have plenty of expression.
The double stops expose a dynamic high end that didn't sound harsh to me at all.
IMHO you can stop and play awhile. Nice work.
