Call for help: the Amp Garage wiki needs content!!!

Post by Omar »

With the number of new members that have joined recently, I thought it would be a good time to give a wiki another try. The old wiki had some issues and frankly not much content was added. Hopefully things will be different this time around.

For those of you not familiar with a wiki, here is a definition from Wikipedia:
A wiki is software that allows users to easily create, edit, and link pages together. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites.
What I envision for the Amp Garage wiki is that those with lots of knowledge can do a brain dump on the wiki and we can avoid the same questions being asked over and over. This can be a big help for new members as well as makiing it easier to find infomation.

You can use your Amp Garage user name and password to log on and edit pages. You do not need to register

I have created a "Current Projects Pages" section on the main page. Currently, these are the only pages on the wiki and they are need of content. I created these during my testing. The "Dumble:Tweaking Guide" page needs a lot of help. :D

The wiki is in what I would consider a "just out of alpha" beta stage so please let me know about any bugs. Also, please provide any feedback so I can get an idea for how the wiki is working for you.

Here is the address:

http://ampgarage.com/wiki

Thanks,
Omar

Not much interest from you guys?

Hopefully by bumping this thread it will generate more interest in the wiki.

With the abundance of Dumble info here, hopefully it will make its way into the wiki! :D

Thanks,
Omar

I think the hard thing is that so much of the great info we have here has been generated by discussion, but once it's all been said no one really wants to go and enter it all into another website. I'm not saying that's how it should be ideally but it is what it is. I think the wiki's a cool idea, and I wish it the best. I just think it'll be hard to make it work.

I understand where your coming from. It does take a little bit of effort but I think the end result could be well worth the effort. What I have done, for example, is copy and pasted some of the postings from the Funkalicious' blueprinting thread. It's good information that may not necessarily be easy to find in a search of the forums say a year from now.

You're right about that, it is getting harder and harder to find things, even when I know exactly what I'm looking for. I guess one thing that might help is if you (or someone.. maybe me if I weren't such a lazy a-hole) came up with a fairly ordered tree-like structure for people to plug stuff into. As someone mentioned on the other wiki thread, I think a lot of us have odds and ends of tweaking/building advice that we've compiled into little text files or word docs or whatever.

I saw your suggestion on the structure. Do you think it would be easier to have seperate pages for each of this areas you listed? Or are the items you listed meant to be subsections?

Thanks,
Omar

Omar;

I'm not a wiki expert but if there was a way to organize this, it might be in an outline format. Unique builds would have their own breakdown including: schematics (and variations), layouts, BOM (with germaine discussion), clips, etc. Other stand-alone parts might be: safety, cabs, speakers, technique, recording, live, professional builders, hack butchery, vendor links, artists, step-by-step, etc.

Once the topics and headings are roughed in, members could nominate posts or threads that fall into the categories. They could also suggest new headings for moderator consideration. Another thing might be some sort of ranking system for highly knowledgable persons (something other than quantity of posts) so lurkers can cross-reference their search by experts. A hit counter and/or viewer rating for threads might also help as well as helping you define what can be purged when the bandwidth gets clogged.

I don't know if I put this particularly well but a library catalog type system could really help define targeted searches. The knowledge is already here.

I had originally thought of separate pages but I think subsections would work. The only issue there would be page length, so maybe a combination of the two is in order?

Maybe you could move the "sticky" items to the Wiki. All of the info that has already reached "final approved" could be there.

I wouldn't mind copy and pasting in some info into the wiki. For instance, Paul Ruby has a great post about tweaking. I wouldn't feel right copying his posts there without his permission though. Maybe that's the holdup for people here?

I'd start with a list of acryonymns for each section, especially the Dumbles (which still haven't made it to a FAQ yet).

I saw something at another site for building high end studio gear where they had a "meta" section with a link at the top of the page directly to it. Where the search and FAQ links are. They weren't rewriting anything, just compiled existing articles about a subject into another page with links to the articles relevant to the subject. Made searching for an article much easier. Like a table of contents with links. It looks like various members compiled the links.

Thanks guys for the input. What I did with Funk's post on tweaking tips was I copy and pasted his text from the thread into the wiki. I prefixed the text with "From Funkilcious' post" that contained a link back to the original thread so you can read the original text.

I think this helps you so you know that a tip may not be the gospel but a high value opinion and it gives you a link to read the original thread.

Keep the comments coming and please feel free to add content to the wiki!!!

benoit,
I took a look and I like the format. Thanks Stanz for pointing it out. What I would like to see on the wiki is a blend so we could have the link to the original thread along with the important info. On the website listed, I found I had too many windows open and you still would have to search through the thread to find the info.

See what I did on the following page and let me know if this would work:

Thanks,
Omar

I put some content on the HRM section. You're welcome to edit and modify what I said, I'm not the expert here.

Not qualified to create content (yet) but it would be good to add the "strat" mods to the tweaking section.

Will try to assist when I get some time.

thanks
