Dumble Clip Challenge
I did a Dumble clip challenge over at TGP.
Have a read through and see what conclusions you can make.
I've just posted the results of the poll. They are very suprising and a number of resident experts on here posted their thoughts to.

Re: Dumble Clip Challenge
You mean like...preferring the Glassworks? They are very suprising...
I have never had the pleasure to play or even be in same room with either amp but my guess was that A&C were the Dumble and B&D were the Carol-Ann. I'll be pleased if I even picked the same amp. I haven't read any of that thread yet so I'll go do that and see how wrong I am. I really have no clue...but it's fun.
Oh yea...both sounded great.
Re: Dumble Clip Challenge
I gave up on that thread weeks ago!
Didn't seem to matter if Ed nailed the tone with a Marshall or whatever the OP (Tag?) doesn't seem to be satisfied unless Robben Ford himself posted......

Structo,
He's not referring to Tag's 'Politician' thread...it's another thread...much shorter and thus far is not straying too far from Alan's intentions (a pleasant surprise).
Alan,
I may have missed it but did you answer Scott's PAB question and did Scott ever make his pick?

Re: Dumble Clip Challenge
I asked Alan about PAB and he told me that he had PAB on. My original guess was 100% wrong!! I based my decision on the bass content of the OD tones. Obviously, with PAB on there was a lack of bass on the Dumble, and certainly not my fave tone. I thought the lack of bass and middiness of the tone indicated EL34. If I knew PAB was on, I would have gotten the OD right.

Re: Dumble Clip Challenge
Thanks Scott...I assumed PAB was ON for the CA but OFF for the Dumble...which probably wouldn't even make them comparable.I asked Alan about PAB and he told me that he had PAB on. Spoiler in white (do not highlight if you don't wanna read it!):
Suffice to say...I am not pleased with my picks. I didn't even pick the same amp. I snuck a listen at really low volume at work (while some guy had the audacity to keep using the nearby copy machine
That white-out thing doesn't work that well here and I can't find the same background color...but whatever...it's still hard to read...best I can do.
EDIT: wow...it's even worse when you submit it it. Oh well.
EDIT2: Got it to work...thanks Omar (color=#EFEFEF for those interested).

Re: Dumble Clip Challenge
I actually guessed right on the OD clip!
But the clean clips could have gone either way for me.
So '67_ Plexi. you are Allan of Carol Ann Amps?

Re: Dumble Clip Challenge
To nitpick on your comment, we will never know whether or not that would have been the case. But besides, Scott, to me the very idea was that the amp sounded like a Dumble with PAB on, without having to read your post indicating whether or not that was the case. Furthermore, I was not the only one who felt that way.dogears wrote:If I knew PAB was on, I would have gotten the OD right.
The interesting correlation I can make is that at some, if not most, of us who got it right tend favor non HRM sounds as a matter of principle (not sure about Norm's feelings regaring HRM VS non HRM). Extrapolating from there: "If you prefer HRM sounds, you can't tell a Dumble from another amp."
Cheers,
Gil

He is...you have a lot of old-thread-searching to do don't you?So '67_ Plexi. you are Allan of Carol Ann Amps?
Re: Dumble Clip Challenge
10% of people got it right. I don't think the PAB would have made any difference personally. It was sheer chance that I picked that one, I did record a couple without PAB and to be honest I doubt it would have changed anything. Everything I play through sounds like a Marshall anyway !! I just thought the OD-2 pulls the tone stack out of the circuit in OD mode, lets just use a PAB version.
At least Scott actually voted unlike a few 'Dumble Dudes' that shoot crap all over the Gear page all the time.
Personally I think he jumped in with both feet and didn't listen carefully enough to the clips. More analysis would have revealed some things, especially in the OD clips.
I'm happy that the people close to me and my amps all got it right though.
Actually Gil, I propose to you the question, Is there really such thing as a Dumble tone ? I had to wrestle with this one to get anything like an OD tone that felt comfortable. The last time that happened to me was with a MK 2b Mesa Boogie. The reason is this amp was not made for me. Each one is it's own entity with characters unique to just that one. There are trademark characters in all of them, but nothing suffers more from an associative misunderstanding than these amps.
Robben Ford tone......thats what the average guy on the street thinks. Have him play one dry without a Dumbleator and it's like playing Metallica through a Twin Reverb.
THe HRM was a huge advancement to my ears, but I never saw that as an endpoint either. That circuit has much more ability to be adapted to different styles if you will stray out of what Dumble did.
Playing my amps I have all the way from from the touch sensitivity of guys like Eric Johnson , Joe Bonasmassa, David Grissom to the sheer power of Drop C/D bombardment of Dr Know of Bad Brains all from essentially the same amp with minor component tweaks.
You couldn't cover that ground with a non-HRM.

Re: Dumble Clip Challenge
My first guess was A & D, but changed my mind on the last listen and picked A & C. I thought the extra sizzle on B & D may have been EL34s. But hey, I am no Dumble fanatic.
Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!
Re: Dumble Clip Challenge
Yep I jumped in!! What I was saying was that I specifically was listening for bass content and for some bizarre reason it never dawned on me you had PAB on the Dumble (as I hate that tone). Therefore I chose the way I did. Maybe I wouldn't have gotten it right if you posed a non PAB clip, but I would have been listening for different stuff.....
Doesn't alter my preference for clip C!
