Acoustic guitar amp.

Post by dragonbat13 »

Is it even feasible to build some kind of tube guitar amp for acoustic and vocals? With balanced inputs and all the things acoustic amps offer?

There's a few out there. Humphrey Amps is another to add to the list.

I would say the foundation for something along this line would be more in the hi-fi tube realm (clean gain and high headroom). Maybe like a Standel?

A high efficiency driver setup would be a bonus too.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

IMO, if you want the amp to reproduce the sound of the acoustic instrument without coloration it beats the purpose of using tubes. Acoustic amps generally need wider bandwidth than guitar amps (probably needs a HF speaker) and while little bit of distortion can be tolerable on an acoustic guitar it will be instantly audible with instruments such as violins and pianos. Yep, definitely hi-fi route, and those hifi tube amps don't sound all that great if you overdrive them.

It's funny I never thought about it that way. Guess I have a use for that spare 50 watt heathkit mono lock I kept for a spare.

I've worked on a Humphrey amp. Cathode-biased P-P 6v6 for about 12 watts, traditional guitar-amp tone stack.
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com
