2nd Gen Hybrid again
Just finished another 2nd gen hybrid.
Different things this time: I had a batch of custom chassis and PCB made( which are for sale btw) and a custom transformer set made by Marble amps in the Netherlands. TAD 6L6GC running at 445v and JJ 12at7, 12ax7.
Basically the same as my 2nd gen hybrid from 2017 but with a little more top end. Beautiful sustain and very lively cleans.

Very, very nice, Erwin! Very clean. What kind of speakers and is that cab open back/oval ported or closed back?

Thanks! Speakers are 2x WGS ET-65 in a oval ported cab.
No the weather is bad and I dont't have room to do that kind of stuff inside. I do like building cabs after this enlightening summer. Next summer again

Re: 2nd Gen Hybrid again
How do you like the ET65s? Have you compared them to Heritage G1265s?
Re: 2nd Gen Hybrid again
I had a set of 80-ies G12-65. One of them got broken and I replaced it with the heritage version. No top end and the new one felt just muddy.
The ET-65 has the top end sparkle that the old G12-65 had, maybe even a bit more.
It lacks the sweet low mids. Overall I like the ET-65 better.
Re: 2nd Gen Hybrid again
Erwin, that is disappointing about that new Heritage being muddy. When did you buy it? I remember there was some issue where Robben Ford used to endorse the G1265 but then Celestion changed them and they sounded bad and Robben threw up his hands at them. But then they changed them back and Robben was happy with them and blessed them again. Don't quote me on that, but I think that is the gist of the story. I wonder if you got one of the questionable ones?! Two Rock has their own version of the 65 made by WGS. Are you not as happy with the ET65 because of the low mids not being as prominent? Sorry for all the questions, just wondering about your experience with them. I have been looking at the ET65s.erwin_ve wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2019 9:41 pmI had a set of 80-ies G12-65. Re: 2nd Gen Hybrid again
Dave, I bought them in 2009, maybe they were a bad batch.
The sweet low mids are not in the ET-65. That for sure is one of the qualities I like about the G12-65.
Update: after some playing I had a strange oscillation with some plopping effects.
During the plopping the voltage jumped about 10v up on B+.
Long story short( I mean really short
) one of the Tad 6L6GC tubes was failing.
I put a quad 70-ies used RCA 6L6GC black plate in....man that is sounding awesome, tighter low end, more detail and they sound like a new quartet tube but better. What a nice surprise!

Re: 2nd Gen Hybrid again
I am a big fan of those speakers in Fender amps. I have a Pro Reverb with one vintage Jensen C12N and a ET65 and they sound REAL similar. The ET65 has a bit smoother, fatter top end. I also suspect the wattage rating is very conservative.Colossal wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2019 11:29 pmErwin, that is disappointing about that new Heritage being muddy. When did you buy it? Re: 2nd Gen Hybrid again
Thank you Charlie and Erwin for your comments on the ET65. I have reached out to Celestion for some clarity on the G1265.

I've been screaming about these old Black plates here for years. My favorite 6L tube in an ODSerwin_ve wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 3:01 pm Dave, I bought them in 2009, maybe they were a bad batch.

I have them in my 102/183. Bluesmaster and my 2nd Generation. Nothing matches the sweet top end of an old Blackplate.
