Volume Pot Noise

Post by Structo »

I have a fairly new D'Lite 44 (2x6L6) .
When the master volume is up pretty high the volume pot makes noise when rotated.
Not really the scratchy pot noise but close.
Is this just because the gain is up and this is normal or should it be quiet?
Amp is pretty quiet otherwise, besides the rushing sound you get when everything is turned up.
Thanks
Tom

It could be a leaky coupling cap going to the volume pot. Check for DC voltage on the pot.

Hmm, the volume wiper goes to the grid on V1b.
The only cap there is the 500pf/ 220K.

Any DC on that lug?
The other lug from the tone controls also have coupling caps. DC can get in anywhere.

Check for DC anyway - could be a leaky cap in the tone stack, passing some DC from the plate of V1a.

So you guys are saying that this isn't typical of this amp to have any noise on the pot when rotated with the master up?
Like I said it sounds kind of like a scratchy pot but with a blanket thrown over it. Best description I can come up with.

Guess I'll drag the meter out and start measuring.

One of the things that has been nagging me, is I'm not sure if I got the polarity of the 1uf tantalum cap right on the presence pot when I built this.
I just don't recall orienting this cap, so that will be something to look at.
