Tony, I'm not necessarily referring to this specific case. You said sometimes you don't hear something until someone points it out. That's classic "power of suggestion." Are we hearing the difference in the parts or in the playing? Marcus was there, and he says they didn't sound or feel different to him.
BTW Marcus I don't think people choose any 1 resistor over the other due to confirmation bias since they clearly picked one and told you why they picked it. Cat's out of the bag
Tony
it is when most people chose the NOS
No, I was going to post clips if I could chose them that are as even as possible from the playing point of view and NOT say which is which and just ask people to to say which they preferred if they could hear a difference. As people now know which is which from the sounds I Posted before they already have an idea which is which so it will be easier for them to choose.
Idk why HAD preferred Dales over others, but I’m putting more weight on the first-hand report from a professional musician playing in a professional studio over what can be gleaned from listening to an mp3. I’d love to try this myself in an A-B comparison, but I don’t have old and new Dales of the same value. As I’ve said before (IMO) the only way to go is switching back and forth on the fly.

What are you talking about . I already sent you the same Dales HAD uses along with some others.
So Marcus is a pro and the rest of us are Deaf. Good thinkin

You sent me some 97.6k Dales, which are not stocked by Mouser. I haven’t tried looking at other suppliers yet. That’s only 2.4% difference from the nominal 100k I have, but I’d like to eliminate that difference.

Really? You gotta be kidding me. You really think your going to hear a 2K difference in value on a plate resistor.

Sorry I cant resist: Marcus Knows Tone and I value his opinion
I've just re checked my project and i don't have any unused audio to re post a blind set. I didn't record much 'before' because I was hopeful the NOS would be 'better' so I could just post 'NOS sound better than new' and be done with it, hence my reluctance to start this thread in the first place, i really wanted it to be so.
I don't think I can contribute anything more to this now , unless anyone has any specific questions they want to ask me
Hopefully someone can do a more thorough, rigorous AB test sometime in the future.
Marcus,
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. This is the first time that I have heard any sort of A/B test with NOS vs new components. Incredibly valuable!
I truly appreciate the sound clips and your initiating the "tone experiment". I think it was useful and the discussion has been both interesting and useful to me also. I'm glad you did it.
One thing that has happened is we've named numerous factors that impact how each of us may hear the tone. I know I have some hearing loss in some frequencies for example. I can't hear crickets but my wife sure can.
Marcus
Yes thanks for giving it a shot and I apologize if I caused some controversy. Just a little frustrating posting what I thought was an accurate representation of how each resistor sounds but apparently I am hearing things.
BTW. I personally think most players would not pick the NOS. Most players are naturally biased to what is in there amp and don't want to admit there is something else out there that they think sounds better. So we agree to disagree on that. It's all good.

Tony,
No worries, I realise I was starting from a difficult position after I posted and then had to try and explain myself which led to more confusion I think as it stands it's raised the pertinent points of view and the discussion hasn't got out of hand. I've seen so many threads like this just turn horrible . I think it's a great testament to everyone at TAG that that hasn't happened
we're all searching for that elusive thing called 'tone' and this little thread will have thrown some light on that
