Dead tweedle De??

Post by norburybrook »

Well, After a great few months of service the tweedle Dee died.

I was doing some tube rolling and noticed a lovely light show from the rectifier valve(JJ GZ34S) then the fuse went. I noticed the mains fuse was a bit 'iffy' so i ordered another one and have fitted it today.Same thing happened, light show from rectifier and blown fuse. Swapped teh GZ34 and it's all on, valves heating up fine, no blown fuses but no noise from the amps at all, it's dead but looks alive. i.e. all the valves are glowing nicely.

Now my multimeter also went on the blink last week so i'm waiting for it's replacement to arrive.

Anyone got any ideas/ obviously i can't test anything, why would the rectifier pack up like that after a short time, and why should that cause a dead amp if the fuse blew?

Marcus it's okay, you're a full time musician. You're allowed to make mistakes.

I wonder why the 5AR4 packed it in, the rectifier was made to handle bigger loads. Maybe it was a quality control thing?

LOL thanks Mark. I hope it was a manufacturing/quality control thing :D Never had it happen before so it was slightly worrying.

Any how, amp is back to it's glorious self.

Hello -

JJ GZ34 are on my "untrusted" list. Two premature failures, each in different amps. Formed view after second fail, then reading various comment of similar experiences of others. Last success was TheTubeStore.com "Preferred Series" & also a previous success with Russian "Mullard".

Best .. Ian
