I am thinking about buying a variac, what should I look for? I use 230v?

For size, something at 1000VA (1000W) or above should be fine. This is not a must-have if you are only building an amp now and then. You can get by with a bulb limiter, which you should use even if you have a Variac.

What to look for.... depends if you want a complete unit, or just a plain variac without housing...
