Trainwreck combo?
A while back I remember seeing some links to some old TW pics that showed a combo (white and red with black speaker grill 1x12). Not a Climax.
Anybody have that link/pics?
Also, anybody see potential problem with making a Ceriatone Liverpool into a combo (not logistically, with amp performance, rattling, etc.)?
Thanks!

Re: Trainwreck combo?
I'd be worried about vibrations/microphonics. I keep my head separate from the cabs - don't even stand it on them...
Re: Trainwreck combo?
You might be thinking of one of heistl's builds (if I recall correctly)dayn wrote:A while back I remember seeing some links to some old TW pics that showed a combo (white and red with black speaker grill 1x12). Not a Climax.

Having always used combos I say "go for it!"dayn wrote:A while back I remember seeing some links to some old TW pics that showed a combo (white and red with black speaker grill 1x12). Not a Climax.

However I'd suggest making amp and speakers "somewhat" separate.
Designs to consider would be the 18watt Marshall and Vox AC30.
Both have the amp "somewhat" removed from the speakers.
Although it gives the best size, think hard before using the Tweed Deluxe style box with a wreck.
**warning** (low mileage expertise above
cheers

Re: Trainwreck combo?
Ken never built a combo. The picture you are talking about is one where someone built a combo cab and stuck one of Ken's amps in it. I just finished a 15 watt version of a Liverpool and put it in a combo cab and have had no problems. If Mesa, Fender, Marshall and a few other high gain amps can house their amps in combos then I see no logical reason you can't do the same with a TW.
Re: Trainwreck combo?
If you look in the trainwreck files section of this site, you will see "Pictures of trainwrecks".Open that and than look for "Various Trainwrecks from the old Trainwreck website".........that will open a zip file and there is a picture of the amp your thinking about.

Chris,
I found the pic and that is exactly the amp I was referring to.
So should I build it with the speaker on bottom and the chassis sitting in a seperate compartment on top? (just like in the pic referenced in the zip file?
Also, what speaker combination would people suggest? This Liverpull has a 1/2 power switch to make it 2xel-84 and also a ppimv (though I don't know how usable it will be. It is going to be a "bedroom"/basement amp so I was thinking about doing a 1x10" open back combo with the new Celestion G10 Greenback speaker rated at 30watts and very inefficient at 95bd.
Hoping this way I would not need to attenuate, though would love a schematic for some kind of cheap/easy parallel load box that I could plug into the second speaker jack instead of having to buy or build a full attenuator. Just want a load for that second jack. Any suggestions or schematics?
Thanks!

If you are dead set on building a combo I WOULD seperate the chassis from the speakers...........As Others have pointed out...this circut dosen't handle vibations very well.......IMHO puting it in a small combo type shell will only get you half of the good's,they realy need to be turned up abit......you get all the tones by simpley rolling your guitar volume up or down......ymmv.

Re: Trainwreck combo?
I've got a Liverpull with PPIMV and half-power. The half-power doesn't seem to have any effect at all on the overall volume, although I suspect this may be a fault. You'll need the MV at just a smidgen above zero in your basement, probably - it's one loud amp...dayn wrote:This Liverpull has a 1/2 power switch to make it 2xel-84 and also a ppimv (though I don't know how usable it will be. Re: Trainwreck combo?
A half-power switch is going to have very little audible effect as it's only reducing the power output by 3dB (all other things being equal), which isn't a lot in terms of what we hear. What we perceive as being half volume is about -10dB, which neatly equates to 1/10th of the power, so a 3W Liverpool would sound about half as loud as a regular 30W Liverpool!captain_rusty wrote:I've got a Liverpull with PPIMV and half-power. That's why I never bother installing half power switches.

I do use the MV at rehearsal and little gigs, and I only usually connect one of my two 1x12 cabs (the other serves as a stand...) They should call it Louderpool

Look into building yourself an Airbrake clone, I did and it was one of the best gear decisions I ever made.
But on the topic of Combos, I'll be putting together an Express 2x12 soon. I'll let you know of any problems I run into.

Re: Trainwreck combo?
I've switched over to 2x10 cab's with head. Hell of allot easier to lug around.dayn wrote:A while back I remember seeing some links to some old TW pics that showed a combo (white and red with black speaker grill 1x12). Not a Climax.

I got rid of my SF Twin for a 67'BF Bassman and 63'Bandmaster heads .. I still love my JCM 800 2x12 I converted to El34's but it is simply to heavy to drag out any where. I just got some 1x12 cab's that are very appealing in size
