Torpedo live; is this the answer to our level issues?

Post by norburybrook »

Was speaking to a friend of mine who's currently on tour with Natalie Imbruglia and his live rig now uses this;

http://www.two-notes.com/en/hardware/torpedo-live/

So he uses his regular amp and pedals but instead of speakers he goes into the torpedo which gives him a choice of speakers and mic's which are fed back to his IEM,s and front of house. Obviously there's no problems with level as it's silent and he, and the soundman have total control of the levels.

You can also profile your own favourite speaker/mic combo.

I've used some of the current impulse response speaker/mic/cab in the studio when recording and they're very very good, in fact indistinguishable from the real thing.

It means you can crank you 100w Hiwatt into this and have your perfect speaker/cab/mic combo at what ever level floats your boat ,without;

1;loosing your hearing
2;pissing off your band mates
3: Pissing of the FOH engineer

Interesting times.

I have a friend who has produced almost every heavy metal record you've ever heard who tells me I am foolish not to be on the Kemper wagon. I don't have a problem using anything that kicks ass. Anything!

My rig is three heads on Palmer PGA-04s.

Ha, funny you say that Miles, in the interim period of posting that I've ordered a Kemper.

It arrives tomorrow!!!

I'll start a new thread when I've had chance to put it through it's paces.

the main thing for me was to be able to profile all my amps/cab and have them at my disposal in the studio without having to set them al up/mic them etc etc etc

having built in FX as well and the possibility of being able to just add a powered speaker to a fly in and out gig is appealing. Or actually even a small bar gig, I could make one of my 1x12 cabs powered with a cheap class D mono power amp for club gigs.

The default lead sound is dry and awesome!

Being able to capture impulses makes all kinds of things possible. All you need for the gig is a guitar and the head.. and the sky is pretty much the limit.

I'm excited! :)

yes, indeed.

LOL it does seems like blasphemy though somehow discussing this here!!!

However, I will say that without all the great classic valve amps, we would have nothing to profile or digitally model so we still need to keep the gene pool alive.

I suppose we can think of our amps like the seed banks stored for posterity or for use if a species starts to die out.

as I said i'll start a new discussion when it arrives.

Also I work with a very famous guitarist, who's name I wont mention, who also has the mother of all amp,speaker, mic collections at his studio.

with the right persuasion, I'm hoping to be able to profile some of his choice items. That will be fun, although I doubt he'd want it to be made know if he lets me............

hmmmmmmm...interesting times....

Nah, my story starts in 1986 when I plugged into a Randall RG-80 to test a guitar and I bought a 120 and had it in my rig that night. hehe fight with 4 holers or play something that does it alone...

Fast forward to around 2005, I found a schematic for the RG and the whole thing was a pair of diodes with a power amp. I used the same in my Marshalls then started developing an amp that would do that without the clippers.

Whatever works! I still love the Randalls for the crazy sustaining mid bite.

Yep that's the whole point. Set up the combination of pedals/amps etc to get you sound and then profile it......

Totally re-call-able no one's going to trip on a mic stand and move the mic from the magic sweet spot etc...that particular tone is kept for ever.

Now I'm getting excited :D
