I'm sorry that I derailed the thread. It started as a winter weather thread.
Here's hoping that you gentlefolks in the Northern reaches keep or regain your utilities and dwell in comfort thru the winter months.
A good friend of mine is the son of an Eastern European Baltic region country. I asked how his family wound up in Mississippi. He said his dad moved to the south after arriving in the States in case he couldn't pay the utilities he wouldn't freeze in the winter. I guess he didn't think about August and 100% humidity.

We got some snow Monday which quickly transitioned into freezing rain.

Not too bad and things were melting Monday.

Just like every Winter here, you see idiots going way too fast, following too close, without a clue how to drive in snow and ice.

Body shops love it.

Portland got hit worse than us.

Over an inch of snow and low temperatures making the crap sticking around until thaw.

An inch of snow might not seem like much but consider everyone of the people in ditches probably aren't from around here and have no idea how
to drive in below freezing temperatures.

But every year that it snows, the same people are in the same ditch...

A good 6 thousand or more miles from there it is absolutely the same, Tom. Same inch of snow, same driver types :)

Those, plus the ones "granny-driving" at about half-a-mile per hour because . . . they're scared to drive in the snow ?!? They drive everybody crazy!

Two things I do: 1) Have a car that's equipped to go in snow. Jeep Cherokee 4WD with heavy grip tires, and most imporantest: B) Don't drive on the first snow day, with all those nuts & granny-drivers out there. Let the first-snow-day attrition remove those that can't, then it's much better for the rest of the winter.

Good thinking , Leo! In the mid seventies I lived in Atlanta. About once a year we would get a couple of inches. The guys that had the jacked up four wheel drive pick-ups would be out there as soon as the first flake fell. It was fun to go out later and see them in the gullies in the tops of trees. They never thought about how to STOP them once they got up to speed.

Aaaaaaaaaand more is on the way. I am where the indicator shows, right on the line of snow, rain and ice. The warning runs through around 7pm tomorrow night.

Full gas can, generator, food & water, wood for the fireplace. Should be ok for a day or two if we lose power. More wood on the way Monday.

18 yo daughter put her Honda straight into the ditch this morning. Had to dig her out in -5 F temps. Luckily I have a good sized 4 wheel drive SUV and easily pulled her out. Scared the crap out of her when the tow strap let go on my vehicle and the hook hit the back of her car. Yeah, grew up farming and have seen a lot worse.

Funny but true story. I went to Canada in September for work training and on the way back through customs, the American side border patrol pulled me over and had me park my car off to the side with four or five other cars. We were told to shut the car off, roll the windows up and step back about ten yards because our cars were going to be xrayed.

I was in shorts and a t-shirt because I hadn't figured on stopping anywhere. But that day it was windy and around 50 degrees so I was a bit cold standing out there. The cop looked at me when I got out of the car and said "damn, man, aren't you cold?" I said I was born & raised in Michigan, this doesn't bother me a bit! He just laughed and said "stand over there please"

About five minutes into the ten minute ordeal I said - just barely loud enough for them to hear - "I hope they hurry up, now I have to pee!"

Glad she's OK . a flying tow strap hook would scare me as well.
