Re: Rocket with reverb for James "Honky tonk" Carother
This photo was a couple nights earlier than the first photo i posted above. It is James working in front of the "Moore and Moore" band. That is Dan Justice on the other Tele and he was smokin' hot! He was using a Blues Jr. amp... i also saw a lot of those on stage. Everybody i talked with said they liked them, they just wished they weren't so loud.

The probably broke Ike's guitar while cleaning , like they did King Tut's beard.
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

Re: Rocket with reverb for James "Honky tonk" Carother
I have modified this amp for James... he said all the good tone was getting him annoying looks from the sound man and he had to have some options in turning things down without losing all the magic.
The amp had fallen over in the back of the van when they were on the road and it broke the on/off switch so I had him send it back to take care of that and a few other items. In addition to replacing the switch, I added an attenuator http://diyguitaramps.prophpbb.com/topic33.html and also a master volume control. I also remount the reverb tank so it has a little more "float" to it. The amp is now ready to go back to James for some road testing.

I like the Merlin type heater wiring to the 12AX7s; I'm planning to do my next build like that.

You can do that Merlin style wiring a little easier if you use the teflon coated wire. The insulator is generally a little smaller diameter and you can slip it in between pins 4 and 5.
BTW pdf64 - I really liked your guitar licks and the tone on "Bad Penny". Was that a homebrew amp? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL-EC4lBpXk I think I hear the ghost of Grand Funk Railroad near the end of the tune

Re: Rocket with reverb for James "Honky tonk" Carother
Thanks for the tip on teflon type wire; I normally like the type with thick, high temperature PVC insulation, but figured that it wasn't going to work for that type of heater wiring dress.
And thanks for the kind words regarding Bad Penny!
Actually I've not knowingly heard much GFR stuff - can you recommend anything in particular?
The amp is a JTM45 type with a few minor tweaks, mainly bigger bright caps on the channel volumes.
It's built in a stripped out Sound City MkIV 50+; I got a couple of them in the 80s as donor amps, as they were really cheap with great Partridge etc iron.
47 ohm sag resistor, as there's no tube rectifier.
