Structo, I agree. My 2x12 is no picnic either. But that sound... So worth the weight.

potatofarmer, thanks for the pic! I saw some of those during my search, but wasn't sure. That pic makes it pretty damn clear.
I bet they sound good though.

Here's the SRO15 in my "Twin", it has the 4 mounting bolts like your pic., but no problems. (The 15" SRO is not alnico, it just has a large magnet cover.) Mine spent the first 20 years of it's life in a Bassman cab, (I reloaded it with EVM15B's), notice the wear on the magnet cover.

I recently picked up 2 EV12L's for $50. One need to be reconed and the other sounds fine. Really diggin the speakers.

Great score!
Re: Vintage EV 12Ls
I guess it actually cost me $50 and 4 x 12ax7's from an old organ I scrapped a few years back.

I'm located in Appleton Wisconsin. I'm planning on doing the recone myself when I get some extra cash. I've done a few speakers already so I should be able to get it done. I might just order a pre assembled kit off eBay to make it easy.

Re: Vintage EV 12Ls
I've had a few of the alnico "coffee can" ones, the SRO/12. Super-smooth, a nice and even EQ curve that sounds good with almost any amplifier...I especially LOVE them with Fender amps though, that's where they were magic for me...a hyper-efficient speaker at 103 db, they make low wattage amps really loud...
I have a pdf info sheet on 'em, it's a bit blurry though...
I don't want to high-jack Blackburn's thread, but I do still have one Alnico SRO/12 left that I never play anymore if one of you guys would like it, I'm a 100% British amp/speaker guy these days.
I'll snap some pics and put it in the Sell/Trade section....

Re: Vintage EV 12Ls
As far as I can tell from searching on the Web the first 3 numbers are the model . The second 4 digits are the specification number and the last three digits are the date code. 1st digit is the last digit of the year and the 2nd two are the week.

30th week of 1980, 1990 or 2000. Not sure when EV started producing the speakers. Hope this helps

Re: Vintage EV 12Ls
I have an Ampeg 412 loaded with 2 EV 12L speakers detuned with a Hiwatt DR504 and two more speakers to load in when I become motivated. I can say that even with 2 speakers this cab will never be moved from its current location. :/Structo wrote:Can you imagine a 4x12 with 12L's?
You'd need a forklift just to move it.
Besides the forklift weight, it is like the hand of God enters the room when I open her up !
