I will send you ALL the tweed work I get...if I ever accept another job. I'm gonna do the manzamp cabinet but wait until it gets warm so I can spray that guitar lacquer...or I'll send it to you!!

Seriously if anyone is in MA that wants to lacquer some cabs let me know I'm not gonna do it anymore

I lacquered an early reissue Bassman I bought. For no other reason than to make it look less anaemic!

Scrounged a Pint (approx.) of orange / brown dyed Nitro Cellulose lacquer from a Luthier friend and attached it with a 1" and 2" brush. Did two coats indoors in one evening, finished with a 3rd the following morning. First coat disappeared into the fabric, but that pretty much sealed it and the next two stayed on top.

I did no cleaning of the tweed and no preparation of the frayed bits ... just brushed it on. Took the chassis out of course and the back panels.

The end result makes the amp look quite old, as the stains that were already on the tweed just take on an "Old stain" look.

Most people reckoned it looked much better than the finish fender apply on the "Ltd." reissue.

Since sold it, never quite "hit the spot" for me .. obviously need to build one or get a real one ...

I only pick at the bones because there have been a lot of threads on various boards lately from people who are wondering why their tweed got all blotchy when they tried to shellac it. Half the on-line instructions mention sealing the tweed first, the other omit the step...I don't know if they skip it altogether or didn't mention it because it slipped their mind.

You really gotta dilute the shellac. That's the key. I gotta post some pics of that spray nitro...that's the fool proof way to do it.

Why can't you just mix some dewaxed Garnet in with your lacquer?to give it some color.I use it to match old finishes on wood and comes out exactly the smae color.

I'm really asking why not trying to tell anyone what to do.

I think by going straight to the shader/amber shellac, the finish can get blotchy as has been suggested. I was trying to approach this like finishing a guitar. Typically you seal the body then add shader coats. I was attempting to do this with the JCM800 clone, but by the time I got the shader mixed up, it got too windy. So we left it with just the clear coats, two or three heavy coats.

I know this is an old post but I'm gonna ask anyway. What are you guys sticking the tweed down with before you lacquer?

hey i recently did a tweed cab for myself.

i used my regular tolex glue (which I've used every time on tweed) - Wilsonart H20, which is a milky white, water based contact cement.

Then I used Honey Pine Polyshades - came out AWESOME - just needed one coat...no clear shellac or anything needed.

Beautiful as usual! Did you apply the glue to the cloth and cab?

Yes, to the cab and the cloth.

You have to use a really light coating on the cloth or it will bleed through. the good news with the H20, is that even if it does bleed through a little bit, you can clean it off with a wash cloth and warm water...but if you move quick it shouldn't happen.
