Teacher accused of branding students with Tesla coil

No charges for Oregon teacher accused of branding students with Tesla coil
Published May 07, 2015

An Oregon prosecutor is not filing criminal charges “at this time” against a high school science teacher who is accused of using a Tesla coil to burn the phrase “I love mom” into students’ arms.

Samuel Dufner was arrested Tuesday at South Salem High School.

Salem police Lt. Steve Birr said students used the coil in a class exercise last week. Dufner told his class it could be used to mark the skin and asked for volunteers.

The 37-year-old burned “I love mom” into their arms, with a heart to symbolize the word love. Birr said the marks have faded since the experiment was conducted.

Marion County Deputy District Attorney Doug Hanson said Wednesday his office has decided not to charge Dufner now but the investigation is ongoing.

The Salem-Keizer School District placed Dufner on leave.

The Tesla coil transmits electricity without wires at high frequency and high voltage levels.

No kidding.

Most women teachers I had were 60-65 years old!

But you would think that with all the publicity about teachers getting arrested for sex crimes or other stupid stuff,
that it would discourage teacher/ student relationships.

But back to the Tesla thingy.

When I was in junior high school (middle school) we had a small engine repair
shop class.

The teacher, Mr. Dimwit, had us crowd around a steel table as he explained the various parts
of a Briggs and Stratton engine.

As he got to the ignition, he held up the condenser (capacitor) and said
that it holds a charge.

He touched it to the rim of the table and about five guys got shocked.

So after we learned that trick, we would play 'hot potato' with a charged cap.

We thought it was all fun and games back then.
Can you imagine doing that today?

That teacher was a lunatic but very popular.

In the second year of my high school vocational electronics course we build a telsa coil and a jacobs ladder. We would do stupid stuff like charging caps and discharging them on a person's belt buckle or behind their ear. Also, we would wire up 15-20 neon bulbs, connect it to the 0-400V bench DC supply, turn out all the lights in the lab and have someone slam the knob to 400 and watch the light show!.....good ole stupid fun.

The second year teacher was cool until his father passed and he found Jesus and the 700 Club and went overboard. He started jamming the rock and r&b radio stations, decreeing that we could only tune to christian music stations while working on equipment in the lab and the only books we could read in class were the Bible and electronics textbooks. It was really weird when he went off on a tangent in lecture one day and started preaching. That went over really well and got him reported to the school board.

Go to court for "I love mom"? It's not like he branding swastikas on their foreheads

My high school chem teacher used to let us make gun powder - after class for fun, unsupervised. We used to steal as much of our "product" as we could and make fireworks (really shitty ones) - you know he knew. just imagine that today! Inconceivable!

We used to steal dissection parts and stick them in other kids coat pockets or backpacks. Bet they'd bring in the cops on us today for traumatizing other kids, and fire the poor teacher who was letting the kids have some fun and maybe even learn something.

We were the bright ones though, I think that's the reason for the special tolerance, I don't think the class bullies or meatheads would have been allowed to make gunpowder. But I can't see any of that anymore, even for the harmless nerds. Probably further destroy our educational system - take as much goofy fun out. I don't think I could have made it through high school without all the goofy delinquency.

My HS chem teacher was inspirational AND kinda loose--He would brew up nitroglycerin and TNT in the lab just to show it really could be done.

One of my pals did some at home and put it in little corked test tubes, hung them on his mother's clothes line and jerked it up & down--kaboom!

We also strapped tubes on our bicycles' front forks & launched bottle rockets with sodium chlorate/sugar warheads. They would burn under water; once I managed to set some beach brush on fire with one, had to lay low for a while after that episode.

Ah but that was long long ago, couldn't get away with that now, too many nannies around!

I got branded with silver nitrate in High School Chemistry class doing paper chromatography once. Totally accidental. Took six months to fade away.

Well I'm 22 so I don't have those real glorious stories. But me and my best friend were the only people in chem. 2 in high school. So we got to play with 13 molar hydro, nitric, and sulfuric acid. After neutralizing that acid I couldn't smell anything for about 3months. I also got to distill some liquor.

We made thermite, just aluminum powder and iron oxide stuffed into o.j.cans. Once the magnesium strip was lit, that would burn through an engine block. We had pretty free access to the Chem storage room, until a douche took a stick of lithium, wrapped it in lab sheets and flushed it down the toilet.
it blew out the plumbing, blew the toilet apart and the door off the bathroom. He worked all summer painting the school, and doing any crap job the maint. staff could think of to avoid jail. I'm sorry I goaded him into it. Ah, good times.

F'ing A! Awesome story! We were always way too scared to touch the lithium. Good work goading him into it! Nowadays the poor douche would have been shipped off to Guantanamo.

We did steel a film container of butyric acid, one small whiff would bring on the dry heaves, a good whiff would make you puke, one drop would stink up a room. We were going to pour it all out at the lunch counter in town but barely made it out of the school, just a drop of spillage on the container made the three of us reek like carrion. We ditched it fast. Pull off a prank like that today you'd make the national news and be branded terrorists.

Anyway, I'm obviously on the side of the Tesla coil teacher, bet it stung less than pulling off a band-aid if at all, you got to go home with "I Love Mom" on your arm, and it went away after a week. Hope he's not in Guantanamo too.
