5E3 Deluxe with metallic sounding buzz.

Post by theundeadelvis »

So I got my Deluxe up and running and I really dig it. But (there's always a but) when I have the volume past 9 and it's breaking up nicely I get a buzz when I play. It's noticeable both with chords and single notes and it's a metallic like buzz (thought it might be fret buzz at first but it's on all guitars) that has almost a phaser like sound to it. So it's a metallic (insect like) buzz, phaser-ish, when the volume is high and distorted (only therevwhen playing). Any suggestions? Could it be the new (Jensen P12Q)speaker needing broken in?

Mine had a bad fret-buzz-like sound, but it wasn't metallic. It was the back panel resonating. A foam strip fixed it.

The cathodyne inverter that gives the tweed deluxe its special sound has a reputation for being fizzy, too. Mine sounds OK, but I wired the V3 stages backward and use a 12dw7. The higher current 12au7 side is the inverter. Plus. I play mostly clean. I read about a mod called the Paul C mod that is supposed to address these cathodyne inverter problems. Maybe someone else can chime in on this; I haven't tried it.

Are you using a 12ax7 or a 12ay7 in V1? Mine has less clean headroom but has smoother overdrive with the 12ax7.

Hope this helps.

I'm using a 12AX7 in V1 and V2. I may try the Paul C mod to see if it helps. It's really only noticeable above 10, but what's the use of having 12 if it only sounds good to 10. I've been trying different tubes, but no luck yet. It's driving me insane! It's so subtle, but not subtle enough for my ears.
