$16? For that power cord? NO THANKS!

Post by Sone Aura »

They took the "sucker" sign off my forehead years ago. I forgot to make the payments, and it was repossessed. Look at the cutaway of that cord. Do you see and reinforcing strands of nylon in there? NO! It is a very basic, heavy gauge power cord. Big deal! I have bought 14 gauge reinforced industrial grade cords at surplus, brand new, for $1-$1.50 each, (in lots of 100) and they were 12 foot long nylon reinforced, sonically welded terminals, medical/industrial grade IEC cords, with UL, CSA, HG and CE ratings. You could tow your gear to a gig on a trailer with one of those cords. They have strands of nylon used to make rope embedded in the casings. The female ends have Teflon reinforced surrounds around each contact, as do the male ends, and I get them for 10 cents on the dollar? Why would I buy a $16 cord of inferior quality? I could get 8 of those cords, or 100 cords that are 10x better quality for the same price. I am not buying them for better tone either. That is pure fantasy, unless your amp has a really super crummy cord. I am buying them, because they are super heavy duty, long enough to make it to an outlet, tough as nails, and cheap! No offense to Mercury Magnetics. They make some super great products, but that is one product I can easily trump. I just bought a a dozen right angle IEC plug cords for my test gear. $4 each, 14 gauge, industrial/medical grade, nylon reinforced. The right angle plugs allow me to shove the test gear closer to the back of the shelves. All those industrial cords are made of 99.995% pure copper, by law. It has to be 98% conductivity copper, to be listed. The conductivity rating is based on silver, and copper conducts 98% as well as pure silver. Silver has problems with oxidizing and it is stupid expensive, but there are idiots (audiophools) out there who will pay $4000 for silver power cords. By the time they realize they have been had, their money is long gone! If silver is so great, how it it going to help anything, when the wires feeding your home from the power grid are made from aluminum?

If you corner the frequency of the resonance you don't even need a power cord.

Corner the resonant freq? Try induction from a substation.

If you practice inside a large power substation you don't need a power cord either, but I would not recommend it. The hum is just unbearable. Seriously, the florescent lights will stay on in an indoor substation from the induction alone, at least until the lamps burn out. You can turn the switch off and nothing happens. The lights may flicker a little more, but they stay on.
