I'd like to introduce my heavy modified Fender Ramparte

Post by GERPUD »

Finally, after asking tons of questions, sometimes really stupid one, I finished my project of modifying my Fender Ramparte.
I must say first that this forum (you guys!) need a lot of credit in my success. It is not necessary the very good answers to my very bad questions that I had, but more the confidence it gave me. In fact, knowing that there were people here to support and help me in potential problems gave me the guts to put the solder iron in a brand new amp for the first time of my life (I bought my first solder iron last december...). I must say that I didn't know anything on amplification before last Chrismas.
So thank you very much for your help!

So, here's what I did (I've provided the schematic)
- Changed the speaker for Eminence V128
- Added a filtering stage (47uF+4F choke)
- Added a standby switch (right after the choke, not shown on schematic)
- Moved the OT away from PT
- Removed: C6, C23, C24, R34, R35.
- Removed: C19
- Replaced C4 from 470pF to 3300pF
- Replaced R7: from 390 to 450k to fit a KT66 Gold Lion.
- Cut the PCB after R19, added a 1M load resistor, replaced R19 to 150K.
- Removed R16, and used to pins to separate the clean channel from power section.
- Removed C25, I needed a place to connect the master volumes, and this cap was not usefull.
- Removed C18
Needed because the gain of the cool channel was to high after the other mods.
- I added two master volume. The two 500k pot are wired in parallel from point 5 to ground. They replace R24.
- I added a second drive control for a second drive channel.
- I added two DPDT relay, driven by 8VDC made from 6.3V heaters tap.
- I made a footswitch to change the channels
- I added two switch on the amp to manually change the channel. Theses switch are not working when footswitch is pluged.

Other mods: Spring retainer for KT66, one coat of lacquer, Gold Lion in V1, JJ in V2, replaced all tone cap with Orange Drop (because I like the color!)

Basically, I now have three channel with three gain on two master volume.

I was always expecting messing up the amp and put it in the garbage, but everything is working perfectly! It may have been done more neatly, but I don't care, as long as it works!

I done with this amp. No more room inside for new mods!
I may try a better/big OT to improve bass, but not right now. I need to stop paying in it and begin playing with it!

Thanks for the comments. I have to say that it is appreciated. I first show and explained all that to my wife and when i was done she said: what do we eat for dinner?
I said to myself i better go to ampgarage. ..

I took me a while to figure the relay setup. With scotchy diodes and 4000uF i get 8.15vdc. The relay i used is 4.5v nominal. The spec sheet show it can tolerate up to 9vdc. Anyway i've put the led in the pedal in serie with the relay suply (-2v) and added 75ohm in series (-2v) again to drop voltage to 4.15v. I used a 100ohm resistor in parallel to the led because current was to high for the led. The relay is on from 3.4v if i remember.
For the switch on the amp i used only 130ohm resistor to drop voltage since no led.
ground of the 8.15v is connected to main ground of the amp. I used stereo plug for footswitch. Tip is for drive, second is for more drive and third connector is ground. So the footswitch is used to ground the relay that are connected to supply voltage...

Ramparte noise

Hi, love your mods, could you narrow down which mods got rid of your hum/hiss?

Rename it!

Great job. Rename the amp since it's no longer a Fender Ramparte. How does it sound?

"It's a Woman Thing, we don't understand it!" The funny part is in 6 months she may come back and refer to some part of the discussion in the context of: If you could mod the amp how come you can't fix the sink?
