Schematics with a 6SN7 in them...where to find?
Hello all,
I'm looking for some schematics that would show a 6SN7 being used in a guitar amp. Do you all know where I might find such schematics? I know that Matchless used some 6xx7 tubes, but I think that was mostly 6SJ7, right? The Komet Constellation is the only amp that I can think of right off that is a contemporary amp which uses this tube...but I don't know where I'd find a schematic of that amp.
Anyway, if you know where I can find some examples of the 6SN7 in a guitar amp schematic, please pass them on.
Thanks so much!

Maybe look at some of the gibson amps, they used some of the octal triodes and pentode octal type tubes 6SL7 and others.. you should be able to get an idea from them. Early fenders used 6SC7.. early low power twin/
Early bassman used a 6SL7
Alamo also had an amp that used a 6sn7 ..and Oahu i believe. probably others. not guitar amps, but also many hifi amps used them.

Cool. Thanks. Are the circuit values for the 6SC7 and 6SL7 the same as they'd be for a 6SN7? If so, I think I might have some ideas...
Essentially, I'm intending to use the 6SN7 as a counterpart to a 12AY7...so I have the choice between low and lower gain.

I have used the 6SN7 in a few different custom builds and it is a fine sounding tube. It is pretty low gain, so cascading stages makes for an interesting distorted tone. They are a dual triode and can use similar values to a 12AX7. They also work well as a power tube. Google "moonlight amp". I have tons of NOS 6SN7s and I plan on building a bunch of different things in the future with these. The good ones are highly sought after by the HiFi crowd.

I tend to think of the 12SN7 as an octal form of the 12AU7 - a high power low mu dual triode. I sometimes gig with an amp that uses a 6SN7 in Push-Pull as the output tube.
I've also got an old EICO power amp that uses a 6SN7 for the phase inverter tube.
Here is a look at the gig amp I mentioned above. It was created by my tube amp mentor - Jason Cox. He has always loved Octal tubes and this one is all Octals... http://boozhoundlabs.com/12sn7-geetar/
Jason also rebuilt a Pro Junior Amp to use exclusively Octals... it sounds awesome! Check out his "choke tail" phase inverter. He is a great innovator... http://boozhoundlabs.com/bhl-15/

Older Ampegs, Jet, Reverborocket, etc... Older Garnet models, he really liked the 6SN7 for the PI. Also some 50's Gibson amps...

So you know the Boozhound guys! Cool. I have read that site off and on over the years and love their sense of humor and the interesting builds.

Right on. Thanks. I'll check out those Ampeg, etc., schematics... Mostly I'm looking for a 6SN7 used as V1, not as a PI tube or power tube...

Yeah Jason was the guy that taught me most of what I know... he also built two or three amps for me as I learned... He's a great guy and really loves to try new stuff.... and Like I say, he loves Octals! You come up with an idea and he'll figure out how to use a 6_something tube in it somewhere.dartanion wrote:So you know the Boozhound guys! Cool. Check this preamp out - http://www.boozhoundlabs.com/mike-vaughn-pre/
Note the Octals - in this case I think they are 6SL7's...

I've always enjoyed the boozehound site. I've want to try the choke-tail PI.
That mic preamp looks great. My dad was in the radio business when I was growing up, and I'd hang out at the station with the broadcast engineer. Love those "real" VU meters.

Okay, that preamp is COOL.RJ Guitars wrote:Yeah Jason was the guy that taught me most of what I know... he also built two or three amps for me as I learned... I posted some gut shots of my all octal amp in the trainwreck discussion. Look for: Red Iron T-Rex

Sweet. Will do.fusionbear wrote:I posted some gut shots of my all octal amp in the trainwreck discussion. Look for: Red Iron T-Rex
I suppose what I'm most interested in now is how one would run a good 6SN7 tube. That is, what are "proper" circuit values, voltages, etc...?
