Impedence selector switch

Post by skyboltone »

Is this the impedence selector switch we buy? Seems like this is the one folks complain about. I need one.

That looks exactly like the one Hoffman Amps sells, only for $9.50 in single quantities:

Mouser does them as well (part 633-HS13-Y-RO):

I thought the one people complained about was the Lorlin one like this where you really need to stack up the poles to get the current handling:

That's the heavy duty impedance switch. It's made by Nikkai (HS13). It's built like a tank  No worries about how much juice it can handle.

+1 on the NKK, and Mouser. $5.50 is the best price around.

You need to interpret the specs correctly. There should always be two specs for current rating: one for switching capability i.e. how high current the switch can interrupt and one for current carrying capability. Lorlins specs say it interrupts 150mA at 250V but it can carry 5Amps across contacts.

It's perfectly safe to use it as output impedance switch as long as you don't operate the switch while playing power cords at full blast. 5Amps into 4 Ohms is 100W.

You are correct. I didn't check the specs of the Lorlin ones as I use the NKK ones exclusively. Rather, I was responding to what is often cited as a complaint of them here. I should have clarified that.

That said, having seen the Lorlin ones, I still couldn't think of a reason why I'd use them rather than the NKK switches as an impedance selector.

Paul,
I'll give one reason: NKK is single pole switch. I use Lorlin 4 pole 3 position and I parallell bridge the poles and contacts - yes, it's a bit of a p.i.t.a to do but it gives me a switch with redundancy i.e. I still have a switch functioning within specs even if 3 out of 4 switch sets fail.
Somebody asked me if my amps are made for combat duty

I'm not implying that NKK is not a good enough switch for the purpose. It certainly is.
