Vox AC10 Information?

Post by The Ballzz »

Just as the title reads. I have only recently heard of this model and viewed/heard some clips. I know nothing about it, age/time frame, wattage , schematic. The clips I heard were F-ing amazing, but we all know that a good player can make anything sound fantastic! Seems pretty different compared to an average Marshall or Fender design?

Looks like a fairly simple build, with the exception of the apparent requirement VERY careful layout and lead dressing. It kinda looks like enough is being asked of the components to lend itself to serious noise issues if meticulous attention to detail is not paid! With that said, every clip I've heard, clean & cranked, has made me want to have sex with anything warm/wet! This design appears to be an unsung hero.
My $.02,

I think they made more as Dominos than they did Vox.

If you make one, please stick with the cabinet plans. The cabinet is the voicing... like 90% of the voicing.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

That's a good point, although, I had been thinking of doing it as a head, using a more standard style chassis. I need to find the correct output iron? The power transformer seems fairly common.

Before I get too deep into plans for this, maybe a couple of questions are in order:

A - Is it a bad idea to go down the road of an amp designed with the EF86 and EF82 tubes? Having never worked with either of these, I have no idea how difficult it is to find good quality supply of either. Will they become even more difficult to find in the future?

B - From most accounts the normal channel on this amp seems lackluster enough to maybe eliminate it, also eliminating the need for an EF82 tube?

C - Should I expect to be disappointed in this amp, due to lack of ability to find good tubes at reasonable prices?

Thanx Folks,

A.
ECF82, not the EF82 which has no triode section and different characteristics.
Running the EF86 for twelve hours solid before switching off has been said to help the reliability (I forget which data sheet I picked that up from) - so get yourself a dog '86 for your initial fire up & de-bug phase.

B.
Without the ECF82 in the normal, you would have no oscillator tremolo in your EF86 channel.

C.
Your call, all part of the game in DIY builds.

Never thought I'd get to say this about any EH tubes, but their EF86 are actually decent.
