There is definitely a phaser in the Letterman clip. If not a univibe type, then it is most likely the MXR Phase 90 shown in the rig rundown. It could be a Univibe or Phase 90 on a relatively slow speed coupled with a faster rate trem. That guitarist says he uses the Phase 90 for distortion. The phased sound is unmistakable. I've played quite a few of the white Fenders, including the Twin, and they don't sound like that all by themselves. You can listen to many of the later Albert King recordings for the slow Phase 90 sound. Just sayin so that you don't build that amp thinking that's what you're going to get.

EDIT: Miles convinced me that the amp makes this sound on it's own. See my post 6 down from this one to understand the reason why.

+1 I think that could be behind the tone you're hearing also?

I've got most of Albert's music and the New Orlean's Heat CD has LOTS of examples of the phase 90 tone. Plus I had a chance to hear him live once.

After listening again carefully, I'd have to agree --- It's probably a Phase 90 beating with the pseudo-vibrato in his twin.

That preamp+tremolo cloned driving a 6L6/KT88 SE power stage would be an approach to getting in the zone without the weight and deafening SPL. One could even find a creative use for the spare triode either as gain or part of a reverb circuit.

The 6G8-A version utilized a more complex tremolo circuit that required one extra 12AX7. The revised tremolo circuit split the signal into highs and lows, modulated and then recombined them. The result was the best sounding tremolo ever offered on a Fender amp since some phase shifting occurred which made the sound richer.

I guess what I played through must have been the non-phased 6G8.

Yap. There must only be a handful of 6G8, and then a very few oxblood 6G8-A.

Mine is the -A. 12ax7s down the middle.

When Fender used the A it is called a Harmonic Vibrato
I own a 5G12 Not the Harmonic Vibrato but the road way to it.

There are two versions of the "Harmonic Vibrato." See for example the 6G4 and 6G4-A Super, and the 6G12 and 6G12-A Concert schematics. In the earlier version the LFO drives a phase splitter directly, whereas in the "A" versions the LFO drives a CF stage, which in turn drives the splitter.

yup this thing has really got me jazz hands about my next amp build, guess what it'll be? hahaha i am REALLY digging the harmonic vibrato, i am studying the schematics like im looking for lost treasure, gonna have to be an eyelet board, i dont think my nifteh chassis mount turrets are gonna fly

im soaking this all up like a sponge, checking out every link you kind folks are sharing. did i mention jazz hands??

definitely will share my build progression here and get some sound clips up, cant say when, but look forward to it! screw the 'normal channel' ain't nobody got time fo' dat!!

oh, i completely understand VibratoKing (Larry i think?), however i will show my inexperience here: i have only built two amps both cathode biased, one a weirdo class A like 3 watts dealy (last year Best Of Show at California State Fair) and my recent Rocket. i wanted to build a big bottle amp with fixed bias and some form of LFO. i want a rather complicated project that will take a long time to finish, i LOVE building and fixing things, and i just built all those delays for Blackburn, so im kinda pedaled out at the moment. i will more than likely build a univibe clone at some point, but this amp has got everything i wanted, plus WAY more!!

i LOVE my MusicMan RD50 and i have always wanted to 'recreate' that amp, at least output wise... the two 6L6 model that LDC kindly shared completely fits the bill. definitely not poo-pooing the univibe, i just wanna build a loud amp! hahahaha
