problem found and fixed

Post by danotron »

I took out the pair of 5881's and put the quad of JJ 6v6 back in.

Boom my power txer starts getting hot again. I put the 5881's backin ...no problem....put the JJ's back in...no problem. I started to measure the bias current on each tube when I got to the third power tube I bumped pin 5 and the current started to flow, it didn't red plate but was really drawing a lot of current, the power txer started to heat up again.

I found a bad solder joint on the Control Grid resistor. Soldered it up and problem solved.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. I was able to find the problem through your guidance.

Funny thing is...after putting the quad of 6v6 in and playing for a while and switching back to the 5881's then back to the 6v6's. I found the 6v6 too bright and in your face. So I went back to the 5881's that I had in there in the first place. There was never a problem using the 5881s because the badly soldered socket was never used.

Dan....

THANKS for posting the resolution to this!

I don't know if you have tried the Tung-sol 6V6's? I use those and JJ's. I think the Tung-Sol have a warmer tone, but like both of them.

I use Tung-sol's in my champ II. They are nice and warm. I use JJ's in my Deluxe and they scream!

I think we should have a TAG counter at the top of the page that counts how many problems are fixed by just 'typing it out'

Good news man.

So with a bad grid joint i would have thought you had a redplating tube??
