I don't understand the logic behind taking a $6M instrument out into public. Wouldn't a $50K instrument sound just as good to the listening audience at 1/120th the risk?Zippy wrote:Be glad they ONLY stole the car and gear...

The question is, it not only was a $6M violin, BUT WHY on a -10F degree NIGHT at a small private college?JazzGuitarGimp wrote:I don't understand the logic behind taking a $6M instrument out into public. It's not about LOGIC.
It's MUSIC, dammit.

IMO.. YOUR AN IDIOT!!
if you steal a very rare and priceless instrument where only several exist.. What do you do with it after you steal it..Put it on Ebay..Unless you have a network of connections to get it out of the country and find a buyer willing to spend that kind of money on a hot priceless very rare violin that can get him jail time if he is caught with it..If not..Good luck in prison!!
BTW..My friend recovered his car 2 days later 2 mi from the club..
The shocking thing was everything was in the car
The thief took nothing not even a laptop sitting on the front seat..The keys were still in the car and the only thing missing was a charge in the battery..So I blame this one on the cold weather..Some drunk didn't feel like walking home in the cold and probably had no money for a taxi..My friend got lucky and found an honest thief..Sort of

That is great news and I appreciate your thoughtfulness in letting us know the "rest of the story".The shocking thing was everything was in the car

I can see it now..Cops knock on door..Suspect:..Ahhh What Violin..
So much for my shot at being international Stradivarius smuggler
In my story the Cops were useless!!!
The whole story is pretty weird in how he recovered the car in the next several days..My friend actually got a call from a law office telling him he has information on where his car was (strangely after Gil talked to a bartender at the club the same day) The man at the law firm said he couldn't divulge where and who gave him that info.. I told Gill he should talk to a lawyer and pursue this..He was happy to just get the car back and nothing stolen or damaged and didn't want the expense of lawyer fees etc etc..
I would have had my lawyer on the phone with that law firm that day!!

Ah, I get it. Your joyrider was a rich drunk guy, who mistook the car for his own, only to find out after sobering up, that the club did not actually have valet parking. Probably even considered having it detailed to get rid of his prints.talbany wrote:The whole story is pretty weird in how he recovered the car in the next several days..My friend actually got a call from a law office telling him he has information on where his car was (strangely after Gil talked to a bartender at the club the same day) The man at the law firm said he couldn't divulge where and who gave him that info.. Oh wait...nevermind.
Re: My Quest for a Better Strat/Dumble tone
Tony, I had my car stolen at a university I was attending in Sacramento. It was parked next to the security building that had guards going in and out. Next day I got a call from the police and this cop says they found my car. I said GREAT and he says no, not great, they pulled it out of the Sacramento river and there was a 16 year old kid in it. Looked like it had been going very fast along the levy and went into a roll. Still horrified to think about it. Your story reminded me. This was in the 80s so before RFID keys. He started it by pulling my ignition out with a slide hammer as was common back then. Anyway, glad your buddy got his ride back in one piece!
Re: My Quest for a Better Strat/Dumble tone
Hey The Cops did go over it and said they couldn't find 1 print on it (a Drunk Jason Bourne)..So there you go.. After all this happend I got to thinking..Our iphones have a satellite tracking device..I don't keep any important information on it so it might in the future be a good idea to have a safe spot in the car to keep it..This way if the car get's stolen and I can get to a computer I can easily track the car..portable lojack..Anyway just a thought..
Scotto
That is awful sorry to hear about that..Totally nothing you can do..If it wasn't your car it would have been the one next to it..
