New cab and speaker problem.
Received my combo cab from Mojotone after 2 month wait and loaded a new Celestion speaker right out of mojotone box (previously unopened) and right away I get terrible sound which seems to be coil rub.
Now to call and see what I have to do to settle this expensive problem. I had a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker go bad on me too from Avatar last year.

I hear shipping speakers is a bad idea. You'll have to build one.

Re: New cab and speaker problem.
Check to see if the frame is bent. It might have taken a hit in shipping if it wasn't packed properly.
You can place it on a known flat surface (glass table top for example) and see if there are any ripples in the frame. If there are, you MIGHT be able to bend it straight and the coil rub would go away.
But it will always be a question mark about reliability later on, so I'd just get it replaced if I were you.
Good luck!

Re: New cab and speaker problem.
I hate sending & receiving speakers.
It's a crap shoot at best.
I've even received one packed with foam peanuts...
For shipping I like to screw the speaker to a square wood board, slightly bigger than the speaker.
Then put expanding foam on the coil side.
Double thick cardboard box.
And cross your fingers.
Personally I don't write Fragile on the box - it acts like an invite to see how far they can throw it for the shipping peeps.
I feel your pain Mark.

Waiting on a return slip. Mojo will test and replace after they test.
I wonder how I will get screwed on this one. Can't blame them really.
I wonder how many guys try sending blow up speakers saying this new speaker didn't work on first try?
Mine was in the original sealed box until I opened it up to install in my Swamper combo cab I received a few days ago.
I'll work with them and hopefully they'll work with me.

Re: New cab and speaker problem.
I've never shipped them, but every speaker I've bought from Eminence was shipped this was - inside a foam protector contoured to the speaker. The Webers were secured inside a thick box and a centering piece of cardboard. Both seemed effective to me. I would think peanuts could shift around and work their way into the speaker... innards. Then put expanding foam on the coil side.
Double thick cardboard box.

Re: New cab and speaker problem.
I had an EV dealership back in the 80's. The EV's were shipped in a thick cardbord box, with a square foam pad in the bottom grooved for the speaker, an upright piece of cardboard circled the frame, and held it against the foam when the box was closed. I had several dozen shipped via UPS, and on a few occasions the box was dented, but all the speakers were fine.
Re: New cab and speaker problem.
Mark, Do you want an EV Force? It's yours if you want it.
Re: New cab and speaker problem.
I can't see Mojo thinking you are trying to con them since you just want to swap out this speaker for a new one.
If you just wanted a refund then I can see some scrutiny.
So you can feel the rub when you push the cone down evenly?

Re: New cab and speaker problem.
More than likely if Mojo shipped it, it went via UPS. They're the worst here in LA. My personal damage ratio with them is 22 out of 29 shipments came in damaged (almost all speakers, but even my golf driver got the shaft chipped).
And worse yet, Mojotone only insures for their cost, so they might not have insured value for what you paid. As you can probably tell, I've had 3 damage claims with Mojo, all with UPS.
Fedex Ground isn't infallible but they're way better than UPS, and less expensive, too.
You still have to pack like this, though.

Re: New cab and speaker problem.
I received a return label and once Mojo tests the speaker we will discuss the findings. That's only fair. I didn't over tighten the speaker and wired properly.
You can feel the rub when you press lightly on speaker cone.
Put in a new WGS right out of shipping box and that speaker works perfectly.
Not my fault is how I see it.

Re: New cab and speaker problem.
The company I work for ships bolt action receivers worldwide. We currently average 250-300 shipments a month. In 2011 we spent about $12K just on shipping insurance with Fedex/USPS. In 2012 we purchased an insurance rider for $5K. The only potential claim [$80K] Fedex lost one of our boxes out to a finisher - after 3 weeks they wanted to throw in the towel. Our ins agent lit up Fedex [seems she knew a VP at Fedex] and they managed to find our missing box the next day. I won't say filing a claim would be more successful but it is great to have someone in the process who is invested in working with you vs. against you - or worse [as we deal with the fed] don't care.

Bolt action receivers?
As in rifle receivers?
