Here goes a counter culture shockwave. When they were brand new.. Red Knob Twin but not at bedroom volume by any measure unless you live in an insane assylum for the deaf.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

Re: If you could only have four amps...
I just freak over 4-hole Marshalls and their predecessor, explaining the single dimensional list below.
1) SE Plexi (1987 preamp driving a 1986 tonestack into a single, cathode-biased 6550A - just finished it last month, I'll have to upload some photos). This is my current favorite as I can goose it with a boost pedal and not completely raise the ire of the resident housekeeper.
2) JMP50 - Clone photos here, per Mile's request:
http://s165.photobucket.com/user/JKCavi ... t=6&page=1
Originally tubed w/JJ6V6S, Since re-tubed with EL34s; I originally built it with big iron and a 1986 (bass) tonestack. Switch on back to go from JTM45 to JMP50 preamp (shared/split cathodes).
3) JTM45 (don't have one, but it's on my list)
4) 5F6-A (cannibalized to make the JMP50 clone above Still would like to have some tweed grind with the later - louder breakup).
All these into my homebrew 4 x 10" cab - open backed w/Emi Ramrods.

Re: If you could only have four amps...
-My '71 Super Reverb. Modded by insane genius local guy in Carolina 20 years ago. Total rocker. I will never get rid of it, though it's only appropriate for about 2 gigs a year. It has a pull boost on the treb control that makes it very angry and about 50% louder. Sounds best with hand rolled accross the dials. I'm actually gonna break it open today.
-My '79 Vibrolux reverb. Yep with the push pull for when you want to annoy the living piss out of everyone. Total workhorse amp that I just went through. It looks quite stock but PI is 330k's and 680r cathode, 47k plates. It's always had a GZ34 in it.
-My 6V6 homebrew Marshall with MM(Miles mods). Clippers, NFB pot, 2.7k/.68 everywhere. Great little amp to get crunchy at home.
-My homebrew 6V6 Avenger(SLO OD channel) built in old Hammond amp. scary!

1. 50 watt Marshall (I have a few and my '71 is my favorite)
2. Deluxe Reverb (I have a SFDR Drip Edge Black Line)
3. AC30 (do not currently have one)
4. Express (currently working on finishing up my clone)

Re: If you could only have four amps...
1) Redplate AstroDust Got to get one this coming year.
This amp is a game changer.
2) Marshall 50 - 2204/plexi setup - mostly Jana & Miles mods.
In Plexi mode sounds killer.
3) 72 SF Super that I tinkered with. Absolutely stunning reverb.
It was a basket case when I got it. Wish I'd kept it.
4) A Liverpool - on the edge of stability. Monster.
Not an easy amp to play but great fun.
Only 4...

That amp through mid 1972 is the one. <3
Oh yeah that one is in range and I can tell by the tolex... look at the ridges. Fresh, crisp texture. The clue. Rockn.

Re: If you could only have four amps...
cool thread...I would need to find/build two more to fully answer the question but mine would include
Ampeg Gemini II--mmm cleans and reverb (stiff)
The 5e3 with 6L6s I built (squishy)
Trainwreck Liverpool in progress (high gain/voxy)
JTM45 (dream build)
I'd be set with those

Re: If you could only have four amps...
I finally got some photos of the SE Plexi amplifier I mentioned earlier in this thread. Poweramp is from the AX84 SEL (6550A) driven by a clone Marshall 1986/7 preamp - 1986 tonestack and a JMP50/JTM45 switchable V1 and V2 boost. Not a lot of headroom. My poweramp voltages are about 10 volts shy of the AX84 SEL. I biased the power tube hotter than the SEL so maybe that has something to do with it. Also, the PT is a Hammond 270FX (275-0-275), but the OT is a 125ESE (from a P1 Ex). I'm sure a bigger OT would clean it up a little more. I could also up V1's voltages some too. Not as versatile as an honest Plexi, but it's not a one-trick pony either. Fun to play and feeds very easily. Hit it with a boost pedal and Shazaam. I am really liking this one.
Anyway, at Mile's earlier request here are a couple of photos of the amp (another red head, Reel), and a link to the album on Photobucket.
