Reminds me of an old Pogo cartoon. Yes, I'm that old.

Pogo is sprawled on the ground looking through his telescope across the bayou when Albert wanders by and asks him what he's doing. Pogo says just taking in the sights. Albert says "let me take a look and grabs the telescope and looks up into the sky with it and gets drenched. Pogo says; "careful Albert, I been keeping my coffee warm in there"..........maybe you had to be there.

Kopi Luwak

Post by FinnFelton »

I have heard that there is a coffee which is made from Cat's poop. The name is Kopi Luwak I think. Is it the world's most expensive coffee??? I have heard about it from a forum where it was being advertised. I am very desperate to try it but sometimes I can suppress the feeling of disgust. :?

The animal is a civet, sometimes referred to as civet cat, but unrelated to cats. They live in SE Asia - Indonesia as well as VietNam & China, and part of their diet they like to climb coffee trees and eat the "cherries" - and the pit of each "cherry" is a coffee bean. The "cherry" pulp is digested, and out pop the coffee beans. How about that, animals like their caffeine too.

(For what it's worth, other civet exudations are used in the perfume industry, as a "fixative." Doesn't smell very good by itself, but it carries the molecules of better smelling items and lets them slowly evaporate. Hey it's in your Chanel #5 ! )

I wouldn't bother paying the rate to find out what it tastes like. Maybe there's something extra good but @$2-300 a pound and up, even the per cup cost is disgusting. Leave it for the Rolls Royce crowd.

Dial back the clock 2000 years. Not just for some Christmas wonder, but consider what well-heeled Romans were drinking. Rather lousy wine, sweetened with lead acetate aka "sugar of lead." Tastes great! While it slowly drives the drinker into insanity, ill health, and a non-stop slide towards death. Kopi luwak sounds pretty good by comparison.
