They are so close, hard to tell the difference. I don't know if it's just how you played it but when you switched to the pedal I really liked the way the pedal was lifting the notes into feedback, maybe that's what you're calling strain, but I really liked it. I didn't hear that on the TKT 183.

The box probably had the gain slightly higher than the OD on the amp. I hear what you are talking about, and they both do it equally. The one advantage I see in the box, is that by adjusting the Z and texture knobs (they seem to interact) you can get it REALLY smooth, or REALLY gritty, and you can open and close the midrange. (The only term that seems to make sense) You can KIND of do that by adjusting the volume, level, and gain control to various levels on the Dumble, but not nearly to the same degree, or quite the same effect. You guys should read about the pedal at the mad professor site, as you would probably understand what the knobs are doing on a technical level. Well, here it is (I copied it from the site) Why no one has done this before (that I know of), and why or how it is giving the box the Dumble tonal characteristics is interesting. Any thoughts?
Z: is a control that creates an adjustable load to the instrument connected to the SBOD input. With standard guitars dialing this control will adjust the upper resonant peak of the pickups and also affect the taper of the volumecontrol on the guitar for easy setting of clean to distorted just from the volume control of guitar. This effect is masked if SBOD is driven by a buffered output such as from another guitar pedal or from active pickups
TEXTURE: allows changing how and when the circuit distorts as well as adjusting overall EQ. Dialing this control appears to adjust midrange, while it gives this impression from adjusting compression. Turning CCW gives more saturated effect that is easily distorted, turning CW gives a slight treble boost and less compression
(compression is used here to describe density of distortion since overall sound may be distorted throughout the dial)

I dont think you are hearing the guitar acoustically, it was above shouting level in the room!aflynt wrote:Not sure if it's just the recording or what but the pedal OD sounded more flat and one dimensional to me. Kind of like it was missing the depth of the amp's tone. It's definitely less bright and clear than the amp in the video above.
Have you tried them both together at gig volume yet? I'm guessing it was fairly quiet in the clip since I can hear your guitar acoustically when you hit the strings hard.

Well, it has to be the first pedal in the chain, if using with a pedal tuner or other buffered pedals.

Both of those sounds do sound a lot alike. And they are good.
To be clear, adjustable input impedance is nothing new. Been done many times so there is no new discovery there. Maybe the implementation is new or different, but the concept is not.
I can definitely hear the acoustic sound of the guitar in the clip. Absolutely no doubt.
They want too much for that pedal IMO. I won't support those prices solely based on principle. I haven't seen what's inside, but I can make a pretty good guess...an opamp(s) or a few transistors, a few Rs and Cs, some pots...all for $300. No thanks. I'll wait till it appears on freeestompbox.org.

To be clear, I got it for $280 with 2cd day shipping included. Its also imported and hand made in Finland so thats adding to the price, plus, it looks like a lot of work goes into it. there are a lot of little hand soldered joints in this thing. You better have good eyes and a steady hand!
It was worth the $ to me, and like anything, some people will think its worth it and love it, others will probably write it off. For me, a pedal hater for over 30 years, its the first one I would use without hesitation for both recording or live use, and feel like I am missing next to nothing from my Dumble. Coming from me, a D lover and box hater, thats a pretty high recommendation. Hope some of you guys get to try one, take your time, and like it even half as much as I do. VERY GOOD!

It's already there albeit in a previous incarnation with 2 Z pots. From what I gather the MP often tweaks things around on his pedals at build time based on how that particular individual pedal sounds to him.vibratoking wrote:Both of those sounds do sound a lot alike. And they are good.

Based on the two units I have, this seems very likely.

So, we're kind of at the mercy of his ears' condition on any given day? I imagine the pedals he tweaks on the day after he's been to a concert are brighter than the ones that are tweaked after several days of low ear stress.aflynt wrote:From what I gather the MP often tweaks things around on his pedals at build time based on how that particular individual pedal sounds to him.

After seeing the pic, I stand corrected...there is less in there than I thought. If it has to be individually twerked, then the design sounds shaky.
I like twerking, but not in my electronics.
Re: FINALLY an OD box that REALLY does Dumble tones!!!!
Maybe it was just the bjfe stuff that was individually tweaked. I know he did do that with some of his hand built pedals.

You would probably really dig a Boss super overdrive then.vibratoking wrote:After seeing the pic, I stand corrected...there is less in there than I thought. If it has to be individually twerked, then the design sounds shaky.I like twerking, but not in my electronics.

Here is my response from the mad man, that just came regarding the old and new pedal.
Hi
Sorry to hear that you are not happy with your SBOD. Well i must confess that we made some changes in newer version of SHOD cause people were complaining about texture knob. So we made kind of tone knob.
You can change your SBOD in old specs. If you give me some time i could figure out introductions how to do it.
So my ear was correct. The boxes are NOT the same. The one I used in both videos is the original one. (Mcdaddys) I can get both to sound extremely similar, but I dig the original more. If I can find an original, I would rather just return this one. I have not seen any for sale though, and for good reason it seems.
