I don't see the need for a 1x probe in a guitar amp, so 10x. I would AC couple to look at power supply ripple.

Do you mean put a 0.1uF 600v cap in series with the probe to block the DC?

That is a safe way to do it. The correct cap value will depend on the impedance of the circuit you are probing, the frequency you are looking at and the input impedance of your scope. 0.1uF should be fine for looking at power supply ripple with a 1Meg input.

Some scopes have a switchable AC coupling built into the front end.

I was gifted a Tek 466 which just needs some cleaning and bought a Hitachi V-212 for dirt cheap from a local surplus.
And, found a 10X CE probe for $3.00 at a thrift shop, brand new!

Coupled with another dirt cheap HP multi function generator I'm in business.

I was initially overwhelmed but with the help of the fine folks here and some YT vids it has been easy to learn.

Don't skip over the Jim Williams vids, he was a trip and a grand resource for learning.

This is just one of many, look at his other vids also:

I tend to favor it because it's essentially the same as my Tek, but it applies to all standard analog scopes.

You've gotta watch this one up to about 5 minutes, when he says: "Alright, we poke around in inventory here for something around 15 microfarads..." I laughed so hard, I almost choked!

It never occurred to me to check youtube to learn how to use a scope - duh, and thanks.
