His Next Amp

I can't figure out how the quote mechanism works, but rfgordon wrote:

It'll be simple--Volume, Tone, Reverb. V1 will be both halves of a 12ax7 in parallel (I may put a local NFB switch on it), then into a Blackface style reverb with a big tank, then a gain/mixer stage, and maybe the old school PI. Cathode bias 6L6s. Prolly end up wicked for slide. Might cover it in brown gator tolex.

You should call it the Swampmaster!

BTW, what's your "low" plate voltage? 350 or so? Do you run A2 or AB1? Or A2 that turns into AB1 at high output?

At the risk of being burned at the stake as a heretic in this forum, I'll confess to using Weber iron for PT/choke/OT in my 6L6 amps. In particular, I like the relatively low voltage I get off the PT I use--around 405 after the GZ34 and choke. That way, using a 250 Ohm/25 watt common cathode resistor, both 6L6s and 6V6s can safely run.

I've A/B'ed Weber OTs against Heyboers, and darned if I can hear a difference. Also, the only iron I've ever had to return as defective have been US made. But then, anybody can have a bad day...

Swampmaster is a good name! One of my guys is saving money to buy one like that, but with a brace of 4 6V6s, and he wants to call it the "Hoodoo Howler." My attitude is--you pay for it, you can name it whatever you want!

AS for the class of operation of the amp, since I don't have a scope, I haven't a clue. All I know is that they all seem to sound bitchin. Now, if only I could get a hempcone 15" guitar speaker....

BTW, in the Rocket-inspired amp I'm working on now, I'm trying Matt's PT/OT from musicalpowersupplies.com. I'll give a full report and clips when the amp's done, which will likely be, due to my upcoming holiday, early August.

Their iron is just fine. I've bought lots of supplies from them, mostly with success. Their transformers, resistors, and most amp hardware = just fine. Most of their caps and pots = no, thanks.
