Passfan Trainwreck

Post by bikertrash25 »

Hello all, I have no idea what I'm doing on your site, but I have to say that passfan built me a dynamite wreck 60 watt amp...the VVR gave me a few fits, but Jestin Puett remedied it with a post phase master volume and its now working flawlessly, insanely loud and amazing gain...I put a pedal train with a voodoo lab power supply in front of it and I can't believe the clear clean result. It's inspiring fun again...thank you William and Jestin...

Congrats Passfan - a happy customer.
We should have him framed & mounted.
Joking aside - well done!

Welcome to TAG.

I've seen some of Passfan's amp gut shots and he makes them look pretty, glad your enjoying one of his amps.

I had the pleasure of playing through Bruce's amp. Very nicely done.

See, that's the thing with any kind of power-scaling control: you also have to able to scale the signal to the appropriate level. Otherwise it's just square waves all the time.

Good job passfan.

What a pleasant surprise, thanks Bruce and thanks guys. I attempted to mate a vvr from dana to a Komet 60 and failed horribly. I heatsinked it but to no avail. Jestin (known on here as funkmeblue) graciously determined the problem and removed the vvr from the circuit. Bruce has been the best customer I've ever had and absolutely refused to give up the amp for long enough to come back to Florida for repairs on my bench. I can't say I blame him ; playing one of those type amps is almost like having the hand of God slapping you in the face with every note. I'm glad you're still tearing it up Bruce and wish you many happy jams with her.

Sounds scary. Curious, did you guys really mean 60W? So is this a 4 x EL34 or 2 x KT88/6550 amp? Is there an old post on it?

Hi,
2 x EL34 a 30W makes 60W. Though someone says 25W - others 35W. But here it is 30W. Depends on the A, AB mode. If I´m not wrong the wreck is AB mode. Dont beat me if I mixed it, techs here.

Pretty sure that if you did everything exactly right, you could get nearly 100W from a pair of EL34s in AB. Not easy because you'd have to run the plates near their max, which is way higher than the screen max, so it would take a pretty complex power supply.

800V on the plates and regulated screens but you'd need some good and sound early Mullards or Telefunkens, and seeing the going rate for those you'd have to be rich and a touch crazy. The original post had me wondering if someone had actually built a 4 EL34 or 2 KT88 Express. I was hoping someone had. I have a Stancor A3802 (3800/3300 75W) guess what that would be perfect for? Too bad it's not 1969. Maybe on my deathbed - the last amp I build.
