Thanks, so the effective .005uf is only relevant is lame-o jazz mode.ATL Strat wrote:The two caps in series come out to a .005uf. I think he was just using what he hand. I used a .0047uf there, but rarely if ever use jazz mode.
Gaz wrote:That's interesting about the big treble cap for cleans since most prefer a larger value for OD stuff. The Zinky designed Fenders actually drop the treble cap to 150p, which I've never tried myself.
Looking at the #124 schem, what is the purpose of the two .01uf in series to ground off the bass pot's wiper? BTW, I plan on only using the Rock mode stack.

Yep, I've hard wired in Rock mode before without it

Have any of you tried #123 values? It uses a 150k slope and was supposedly voiced for a strat.
Just throwing it out to try. I doubt there's a one-size-fits-all, even among us low-output single coil lovers.

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
Most the ODS type amps I'm aware of use a 150K slope resistor.
If you want to move the frequency response of the whole tone stack up or down that is a good part to experiment with values.
What I did on my 100w ODS was utilize a switchable cathode bypass on V1a going between a .68uF and 4.7uF
Labeled the switch SC and HB.
I use the .68uF for humbuckers and the 4.7uF for singles.
Been meaning to revisit that and try larger caps for my Fenders.
Like a 22uF.
I also like using 250K pots in the overdrive section as well to make it more throaty.
Maybe change the switch to DPDT and switch both caps on V1 to fatten up the tone for singles.
I only have a couple dual humbucker guitars, so I would like to get the singles to sound good as well.

I've seen the schematic, but I haven't tried it yet. Looks interesting. I've got a big ol' PA chassis that I use for trying out new things, I may have to wire it in there one of these days.LeftyStrat wrote:Have any of you tried #123 values? Yes Skyliners maybe, the Classic normally has a 100k slope.

Yes, a high plate classic with a Skyliner slope, but I prefer a 120k slope value in that config.LeftyStrat wrote:Have any of you tried #123 values? It uses a 150k slope and was supposedly voiced for a strat.

The amp I built stays clean right till the end. Only when the pre amp volume is turned right up it starts to break up. Very nice bluesy sound. If I ever decide to rebuild it, I'd build one with a relay switched PAB.ToneMerc wrote:I agree, I would start there. I have another general follow-up question about the Dumble stack...
With the 'separated' mid control using a 100KL pot, is the tone more or less scooped that a typical Fender? Has anyone simulated the Dumble stack next to Typical BF Fender stack?

In the skyliner tonestack the tone is a LOT less scooped than BF Fender.

Cool, any idea about the #124 stack? That's the one I was going to try.

The #124 was born with a classic tone stack (search for 124 and user MAX) and converted to skyliner.Gaz wrote:Cool, any idea about the #124 stack? That's the one I was going to try.

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
To clarify, the classic stack is the one I'm interested in - 100K slope, 330p treble, .1uf bass, and .047uf mids. Pots are 250KA, 250KA, and 100KL. I believe. I'm wondering how the separated mid control, effects the 'flat' setting (all controls at noon). Is it less scooped than the traditional BFFender stack?

The answer is yes.
However, The classic stack values (with the pots at noon)
(100K slope, 330p treble, .1uf bass, and .047uf mids. Pots are 250KA, 250KA, and 100KL)
will also be less scooped than a fender blackface, due to the much larger mid pot value. If you run the mid pot low at 0.5-1 on the scale (6.8K to ground) you will get classic scooped fender blackface tones. The treble cap, 330p vs fenders 250p, will give you a rounder top end and not as much zing.
