Electric Guitar recording setup
What kind of recording setup do folks use for recording demos and youtube videos? I have tried recording demos with a Tascam US 122 and a SM57 as well as several condenser and can never get even close to the sound quality I am looking for especially with any sort of overdrive.
Re: Electric Guitar recording setup
A 57 on the cone, off axis, is THE sound. I know what it should sound like, I know what hundreds of other recordings made this way sound. So I really appreciate it when demos are recorded this way.
It's not all that flattering outside a mix, but if you want to communicate to the rest of us a real sense of the amp, the 57 is the way to go.

I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

I remember Eddie Kramer discussing recording Hendrix. Unfortunately, he used several mics, none of which I can afford (all around $600).

Depends on if I am at work or at home. At work I use an ipad, and at home I use an ipod. It sounds terrible, and people are familiar with that. Saves having to patch a bunch of gear just for me. lol

Xtian has a point re the SM57. One of those, a USB audio interface, and a PC is a pretty simple rig that makes good quality recordings.LeftyStrat wrote:I remember Eddie Kramer discussing recording Hendrix. Unfortunately, he used several mics, none of which I can afford (all around $600).

Xtian made another good point. A guitar track can sound vastly different soloed than in a mix. To my ears, an amp that cuts well through a mix does not always sound all that great on it's own and visa versa.
