I just found a great pedal match for a rocket....The whiteface RAT 85 reissue!! Sounds like metal....
I tried before tube screamer style and it wasn't a good match at all!!
Other pedal I loved in front of the rocket is the D*A*M red rooster, What a sound!! instant Brian May lyrical melodic goodness!! Other experts had recommended fuzz pedals, I'm sure germanium transistor fuzzes would sound awesome!!. It makes it a really versatile amp. I still love it with nothing in front but AC/DC crunch would be its limit.
What a great amp!! thanks Ken!!!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone here!! I love The Amp Garage!!
Push pedal, Geek Screamer, OCD, and many others work great for the Rocket.
I like to set the amp just about where it starts to breakup, then use pedals for the boost,or other effects you might want to use.
But yeah, a pedal in front of this amp works very well.
To keep my Rocket amps on the cleaner side I use low plate 100k on V1.
A stock Rocket breaks up too early for me. If I need more boost I either set the amp up with foot switch V1b gain boost or use pedal board to get my distortion.
Never though about a zendrive!! to me a zendrive should be in front of a blackface fender or clone so when you step on it you can have dumble overdrive channel.
Since the rocket is more vox style, a treble booster provides Bryan May and a distorsion pedal could get plexi cranked tones!!
Interesting examples here to see what sounds good to people. I didn't like a tube screamer in front of it at all!!
A friend did recommend an OCD.
But then he said "bet you have to have more than 1"
I thought he was winding me up. He knows my OC tendencies.
Maybe he wasn't.
Maybe I need 2 or 3...
Maybe I need a bigger pedal board.
I definitely need more amps.
And guitars.
And stuff.
I should get an OCD pedal to start the process.
I really like the Tonebone though. Great for punching in the leads.
I have an old expensive TS-9 I don't like at all, so I use Boss Blues Driver for one type of drive and the Zendrive for a wide range of drive tones very smooth. Now with the addition of the Wampler Tweed 57 I can cover a lot of territory through that voxy sounding EL84's.
