Re: MacIntosh!
You slipped your decimal point, I'm afraid. 18F would look like this: 18,000,000uF.

Re: MacIntosh!
They are 38000uF = 38mF

All right, color me slightly less impressed.

Oops, you're right Aleksander. I mistook the 3 for 1. Yikes, where are my reading glasses!

Still pretty impressive.xtian wrote:All right, color me slightly less impressed.

I've got the McIntosh beat by 32,000uF in my homemade stereo amp. The filter caps are 3 inches in diameter.
Solder on,

When I was on the repair bench years ago, a coworker put a big power supply on his bench, connected it to 440VAC and hit the breaker. A filter blew. It blew out ceiling tiles on the 40 foot ceiling and spread oil over about a 20' radius.

I heart that very much, George. What wattage output? Is it a headphone driver?George61 wrote:my homemade stereo amp

Re: MacIntosh!
What's interesting for me is the convergence of batteries and capacitors. I used to be into building electric bikes. There's a company named A-123 that makes a lithium polymer battery with insane charge and discharge rates.
Imagine using batteries instead of caps in your power supply.

Have you seen the insane Ultracapacitors that Maxwell makes?
I want to build a flashlight or drill that can recharge in a few seconds.

Re: MacIntosh!
You're talking electric, super-insane, pure DC motorcycles right Lefty? I saw a piece (think it might have been Nova Science Now with David Pogue) about a couple that held the record for fastest lithium battery powered e-bike. IIRC, I think A123 was mentioned as the supplier.LeftyStrat wrote:What's interesting for me is the convergence of batteries and capacitors. I used to be into building electric bikes. Re: MacIntosh!
I don't have a dummy load large enough to test it. The amp uses lateral MOSFET's for output devices so it's not as effecient as a bi-polar amp. The circuit boards are from Elliott Sound Products and in the project writeup Rod Elliott got 180W rms per channel at 8 ohms with ±70VDC rails. Theoretically the power would be doubled at 4 ohms. With only four output devices per channel running the amp at 4 ohms at 70V is pushing it. My line voltage is high and varies so I am getting anywhere from 72-74 volts on the rails. I have a 92mm fan for each heatsink and thermostats for thermal shutdown. I am using the amp for bass in a biamped system. The bass cabinets are sealed with an 8 ohm driver (not very efficient). I push the system and the fans will run but the heatsinks never get above 150° F. The power transformer is 1KVA. The power transformer has dual secondaries; each one is 50V @ 10 amps. With 108,000 uF of filtering there isn't any 'sag'.xtian wrote:I heart that very much, George. What wattage output? Is it a headphone driver?George61 wrote:my homemade stereo amp

Those caps should have a picture of the Quaker Oats guy on 'em.
